I went to the NEC Autosport show today and saw the facelift 225 in a lovely flat blue thaat is a little darker than the clio flat blue, not many changes really very subtle but I like what they have done with the front also the rear lights I think are great!

Will post some pics in a bit!!!

meggerman
16-01-2006, 20:12:38
doesnt look as aggresive but it looks more classy and grown up i.e designed better rather than just a huge letterbox at the front

having just said that i still prefer the old one (just) i like the ott cave man styling of old one.

if there was a 4wd 320 bhp version it would extend the brand and this forum but i feel that would lose any point in owning the megane, at least what it has over the clio is build, comfort, refinement, straight line performance (just unless mapped) still resonable economy compared with other simular cars.

basically it would be nice but i wouldnt bother. a 225ps (220 break) wrx impreza does 27mpg at v.v.v.v.v.v.v.v best 30mpg on a steady motorway run just < 15mpg when caining. why ? .. because its permanent AWD so for me the compromise of the megane = great performance, great safety, pretty decent build and refinment, spec + decent economy and only grp17 insurance.

a 320 bhp 4wd megane would do 20mpg and be grp 20 insurance ? i would just buy a more accomplished more savage and ultimatley more hardcore EVO with better diffs, electronics, better steering, suspension etc.. the reno wouldnt come close even with big bhp and awd of its own, it would take years for reno to perfect a reliable system.
also reno`s are easy to service and cheap to service but poor service. can you imagine going to reno with a broken washer jet let alone a problem with your 4wd system, turbo or differentials ekkk  reno`s just arent designed for that extreme power, even RS`s clutches cant take much extra power where as a VAG mobile (boring as they are) even the cheapest varaint the Seat, can take another simply massive 60lbft and 60bhp ! a reno usually manages half of that before clutch slipage or need for engine Gbox strenghning, a 320hp megane would not be like an evo or scoob where you add a full exhaust and see near 400bhp

still i hope they do it just for the crack.

Jon Seal
16-01-2006, 20:29:06
I think your missing the point of a 320bhp megane, If you could afford the 30 grand + price tag fuel consumption is not even on the agenda. Its not really on the agenda for 225 owners as if you were that bothered you would still be driving a clio!

I think it would make a lot of sense. How many people on here considered a WRX before buying a megane but couldnt live with the image? Imagine and EVO FQ300 or scoob RB5 enclosed in a socially acceptable, 5 star safety shell. It would be awsome! There would be a lot of scope for a nice sleeper version like the normal megane now or a full on STI type bodykitted thing. Hmm maybe if renault are pulling out of F1 they might take the megane rallying?

JamieMac
16-01-2006, 20:34:58
I agree Jon I love everything about the Scooby and the Evos apart from seeing them, hearing them and most of all driving them!!

Bloody boring and have no character

I have the only 225 in my area for miles that I know of but there are hundreds of Evos, Scoobys and Skylines!!!!! They will all learn one day!!

16-01-2006, 23:05:09
Meggerman,

Shoot me down if I'm wrong but surely Renault have the knowledge and expertise to create a Megane capable of 320BHp that works? They created the Trophy race car, all manners of formula single seaters etc - they have a history of motorsport - would they not have the technical knowhow and resources to create such a car? :?

andy bassett
17-01-2006, 00:00:40
most of the 225s engine and running gear parts are japanese anyway arnt they and 9 times out of 10 they last for ever, granted turbos blow and clutches slip and gear boxes go but they do on all cars, part of life and owning a car, bring on the 320 horses thats wat ill say. :D

If renault did do a 4x4 they would probably use some nissan running gear from a 4x4 so engineering wouldnt be a massive problem

meggerman
17-01-2006, 15:40:21
for the person that said running cost were not important i have to disagree. the megane 225bhp costs 16k from internet retailers a wrx impreza 220bhp costs 17k new.

a few differences.

wrx = grp 19 ins, 25mpg (usually Much less due to PERMANENT 4wd system)
megane grp 17 (same as 172cup) 32-35mpg (capable of more) (save £40 a month over a wrx impreza on average for me)

wrx more road tax than megane and higher servicing costs.

the cost of running on both evenly priced cars would probably equate to at least £1000-£1500 extra a year for the wrx over three years = £3000-£4500 so your paying a fair ammount more. this in tern also means higher road tax and servicing costs. only difference is the megane is safer and imo a nicer car.

running costs do count when you intial purchase point is £16k-£18k

as you rightly pointed out it doesnt matter on a £30,000 car as its so expensive in the first place but at £30,000 id most likely not choose a hatchback for transport when there are state of the art stylish and rock solid built with exellent residuals Audi A4 quattro S-lines kicking around with 250bhp turbo`s 2.0T FSI more tunable easily to 320hp also and 4wd quattro. etc..

in fact if you had £30,000 to spend it would probably be a high powered diesel awd company car. not many people spend that much on a weekend car or a fun french hatchback.

at £16k and more importantly in the future 90% of users on this forum who can finally own a larger Renosport to fit their requirements as the clio is either too old or too small will buy 2nd hand, part ex at around £12,000 and at that price insurance and economy certainly does matter. you dont buy a £12k ford focus with evo style 4k servicing and 16-8mpg purchase price shows that the owners of the megane (or nearly all of them) will also require decent economy, servicing, warenty package, and insurance.

dunno if you get what i mean but i tried to explain anyhow. i agree 50mpg diesel is what you want if you need complete economy but that shouldnt mean if you want a resonably priced performance car you should expect 5mpg either.

all imo

:D

Jon Seal
17-01-2006, 18:54:37
hmm WRX is probably a closer benchmark for running costs than you think, mpg is similar ie 25 if your carefull, 10 if your not, 4wd will have barely any effect on fuel economy as its not all that much of a drain on a cars power, especially if you take into account that more of the power actually gets on the road more efficiently.

The only area where a WRX is going to cost you more is insurance for obvious reasons, the 225 costs less to insure than a clio 172 despite a higher insurance group. Also road tax would be the same as both cars are 2.0l

225s arent all that bad on fuel if you drive steady, its only 4 or 5 less than an RS clio. I was talking to a guy at the weekend who was getting 60 miles out of a tank in and EVO so that puts it in prespective. But really if your penny counting over fuel any 2.0 turbo car should be off your shortlist. Also consider you'll need a set of tyres every 8k, my car is gonna be needing full discs and pads all round with 14k on the clock, those sorts of running costs are a shock coming from a clio but one I'm luckily prepared for!

Doc883
17-01-2006, 22:12:20
Jon - Take it you hammer the 225 a fair bit given the combination of your low mpg, high tyre wear and worn brake pads/discs  How many track days have you done to need the brakes changing at 14k ish ? My car has 13k on the clock, the tyres still have 4mm of tread all round, my average mpg is 32-34 and the brakes are miles away from needing any attention. Think a combination of 80% motorway driving and a light ish right foot have helped me there :D

might make some enquiries. I migth look at doing one of those 3 year things, hand the car back or get another one. Are they any good?

andy bassett
18-01-2006, 22:21:58
i think so, in bin on that plan for almost 10 years now, you basicly rent a new car from them every 2-3 years and give it back and get a new one.

BlackRat250
18-01-2006, 22:23:07
Im looking at doing that as i don't want to keep a car for longer than 3 years. How much is it a month if you don't mind me asking?

andy bassett
18-01-2006, 22:28:13
i put no deposit down as that come out of the money from the old megane i had, payments on this one are over 5 years with no final payment at the end. £320 a month. ( this is based on the silver one i got which was the same as the blue one to)

BlackRat250
18-01-2006, 22:29:09
Can you change it in 3 years if you wanted to?

JamieMac
18-01-2006, 22:32:39
thats exactly the same as me Andy

andy bassett
18-01-2006, 22:36:46
if you want yes, wat you do is take it in and they will give you a price of wat its worth, get a settlement figure on wat you owe put the two together.

so if they say the car is worth 10k and you owe 11k then its not good to sell unless you put 1k into the car wen you sell it or you put the 1k ontop of the new car you going to but.
or you keep the car for another couple of months till it comes to a level balance.

if they say 11k and you owe 10k you can put the 1k down as a deposit on the new car and start again on a new car.

i normally wait till there are both the same ie 10k -10k and chuck it back and start again on a new car but i alway make sure there is enough money in it for the deposit. so for almost 10 years iv had a new car every 2-3 years.

BlackRat250
18-01-2006, 22:50:36
Do you have much of a deposit to put down?

JamieMac
18-01-2006, 22:52:57
I originally put down £2400 for my Clio 172 before and I didnt put anything down on Humpty

andy bassett
18-01-2006, 23:01:56
Do you have much of a deposit to put down?

normally around 100 -1000. 99% of the time i just put 100 in

BlackRat250
18-01-2006, 23:05:40
Kool, i might look into it. Does it work out cheaper to do it that way or get a loan and sell it on after 3 years?

andy bassett
18-01-2006, 23:08:26
you might end up selling the car and still having to pay of the loan, if you take a 4 year finance term with rens then wen the car goes you know the loan will to.

personaly sod the loan.

do you own your one now

BlackRat250
18-01-2006, 23:09:27
I own it now, but have got about £5K left to pay off the loan.

andy bassett
18-01-2006, 23:22:13
so say you chopped it in tomorow, ren would prob give you around 11-13k tops for it if you were very nice to them, so say they new 225 is 19k that would leave you around 6-7k to pay in 3 yrs and im 99% sure you might get that 0% as well.

so 7k 0% over 3 yrs would cost you £194 a month
6k 0% over 3 yrs is £166 a month

if not 0% then it will be 7k 3 yrs = £216 a month
6k 3 yrs = £189 a month

BlackRat250
19-01-2006, 16:08:27
Kool, might go and have a chat with one of my old school friends who works at renault, see what he can do.

I am pretty sure they don't do a 5 door version of the F1. I say this because the Recaro option is only available for the 3 door. The hatch also has Leather seats as standard now, Xenon and heated seats is off the option list now so maybe they are standard?
