: Diesels.....

Anyone got any experience of a good, cheap diesel.

I'm looking at chopping in my Clio RT next year for something diesel.

Found a couple of 2000/2001 Meganes which had relatively low mileage, were well priced and good condition.

But what I'm wondering is, if you go for a turbo diesel, how many miles to the turbos last for?? Would I be looking at replacing it at 80k? Or are they more sturdy than that?

I'm gonna driving every other week to Bristol so about 120 miles each way.

Need something thats gonna be a daily runabout like my Clio is but give me a better MPG. The Clio costs me about £13/£14 each way. But I'd like something that I could cruise a bit higher than 65-70mph but with the same or better economy.

VAG derv burners are the best, you could get a 130tdi mk4 golf for a bout £4k, I worked out in my old mk4 it cost about 10p a mile in fuel, & that was remapped too..

Yeah I did think they'd probably be the best TDIs around, only thing is I'm only looking at spending £2k with whatever I can get for my Clio RT on top, so I'm guessing about £3k max.

The question I've got is that, do the turbos in modern diesels need replacing under 100,000 miles???

I've found a couple of mk1 Meganes, one of which is a turbo diesel with 60k on the clock. Am I likely to need to replace the turbo at 80k?

Guy I work with reckons I would but I've heard of the VAG TDi engines lasting for a lot longer.

If you don't mind me asking mate, how much you get it for??? Thats exactly the kinda thing I'd be after.

For the coming future as far as I can see, I'm gonna be doing 240 miles every other weekend, which although not great distance on top of my £120 train ticket to work, isn't exactly cheap. lol

if you're having to replace turbos pre 100k then its been used as a race car.
We've had (and still have) cars post 200k with no issues whatsoever. All regularly serviced and most covering motorway miles.
Short distances, where the oil hasn't had time to reach temperature and lengthy service intervals will shorten its lifespan, but realistically, it shouldn't be something to worry about, in terms of the mileage of the cars you're looking at.

I had a vag unit before the megane. Safe to say, it was and still is, the best car I have ever owned for performance divided by reliability and economy.

3500 in the end it was a trade out from my fav dealer, Serviced new tyers, and a few other bits and peices. It was one of there cars so i know its been looked after, 35 squid a year road tax.

The 80 is meant to be better though, the 65 is just a De tuned version

how much to retune vs cost of buying an 80` in the first place though ? also insurance cheaper too, so for ultra-economy you might save over 2yrs by choosing a 65, but if people are that desparate they may aswell get the bus :D

Not loads of Differnce in the Price but the 80's hold there value better and they are in the same insurance group, My 80 has been re map'd to over 100 bhp but the torque is miles better

i might get one, 100hp and derv torque in a featherweight must make it more than quick enough considering the amazing economy.

what ins grp is it and whats your econ

Think its Group 3 it cost me 380 to insure it with no noclaims as they are all in the Meggy, It feels quite lively on the motorwar and my mixture of motorway, Stop start and Country driving is giving me about 57-62 mpg

I've had and run a 65 clio, it only ever managed 50mpg.

For some reason the dealer told me that the 65 was worse than the 80 for Economy

I wouldn't mind any of the DCI range of Clios, ideally the 80bhp but the 65 or 100 versions would be fine.

Also did and insurance quote and with the same insurers it would cost me £40 more per year to insure a £4k diesel Clio fully comp than it costs to cover my £800 Clio RT 1.4 third party!!!
