Ive found in the past that most petrol cars prefer the cold weather, something about it which makes them drive and respond better.

This leads me on to the point of this thread....

I am finding that my dci hates the cold my mpg has dropped from around 45 to 35mpg. Im not driving any different and as far as i am aware the car is mechanically sound!

I mentioned this to my old man who has a new diesel vw passat and he said his was exactly the same.

Anyone found this??

40 mpg But i've only been doing short journeys so not really enough time to fully heat up, Apparently you can get Summer and Winter Diesel. I haven't seen any though!

The formulation of both diesel and petrol is changed throughout the year by the manufacturers. In winter diesel will have different additives to inhibit freezing and also to make it a bit more volatile so it burns easier. Its not unusual to see reduced mpg when the formulation changes. It'll probably improve once the ECU adapts

i noticed the same in my golf as well. its doing around 6-10 MPG less in the cold weather.

against the trend, my mpg has gone up in the past 6-8weeks. now getting about 50-60 extra miles to a tank. nothing about my driving has changed, seems strange as everyone else is getting less, not that im complaining.

If cold = winter, then you will be using more juice for heating (blower & back screen), demisting (aircon), lights, screen/lights wash. None of them that much by themselves but makes a difference when all on at the same time & for a long time.

you have to remember as well that colder air is denser so the engine will ingest m,ore air, the fuel mix to compensate will be greater-meaning using more fuel.
