How I got her. Only 31 of these cars were ever registered in the UK so extremely rare!

How she looks now with a full ph2 rear conversion, cup spoiler and fully colour coded. Also replaced the coilovers with FK konigsports so i can go lower on the back.

Are the dampers you have on it at the moment single, double or tripple way adjustable? Do you have front camber adjustment and what spring rates are you running.

Give me an afternoon on it at the workshop and I'll give you a car which will maintain the same G on a skidpan as it can at the moment, if not better it, but also will allow you to take a bumper sweeping corner flat ........ but it'll be 20mm higher at least!

Compliance is everything and with a road car as light as a Phase 1 172 its easy to achieve very good results.

Cheers
M

P.S. I know where theres a set of Tripple way Ohlins if you're interested....

225 suspension setup is way more advanved than that of the early 172's, you have all the basics in the right place i.e. steering axis front suspension etc. All you need is a proper setup on it. I reckon Cup chassis with a slightly softer rear ARB and a very slight increases in rear damper effort will get you there, it'll understeer a sniff more at the limit than a standard Cup chassis car does but that limit will be a fair few MPH more than the standard car, as such if you can drive it at that and don't mind scrubbing front tyres it'll lap much quicker whilst still being very well mannered on a road and more importantly you'll be able to really get into a B road rather than having your 'skippy rear' issues again..........

thanks guys :) I've pm'd you back Neil.

The coilovers are fully adjustable FK konigsports, gonna get the properly tracked and set up in a couple of weeks, just waiting for the ride height to settle. If it was a track car i'd definatly raise it like you say, i know the stance its got now is not ideal for cornering ability.

When you say fully adjustable do you mean tripple way (i.e rebound, slow and fast) or just that the spring platforms are height adjustable?

As a track only car you could go much lower and stiffer than that as the required amount of compliance is much much less than a road car, the tarmac is considerably smoother on a track than it is on a B road!
You need this compliance to maintain tyre contact patch over bumps, ruts and the general state of the roads in the UK today. Without it a bump or similar will lift the car as a whole rather than being absorbed by the suspension and therefore maintaining good body control and stability.

On a road car lots of damper travel, good (but not soft) spring rates and well thought out ARB rates make a fast car. Drive a TVR Chimera and a 225 Cup back to back down a B road and you'll go much faster in the 225, the Chim has very little rear damper travel which has the effect of loosing rear end grip mid corner when loaded up and encountering surface defects

got the konigsports so i can adjust the heights, but can also adjust the dampening/reboud. car hasnt been setup yet so the camber etc. is just from when we wacked them on the car so it really does need to be setup. ive raised it about 10mm on the back, and 25mm on the front from when i initally lowered it and it handles far better down the B roads than it did originally but really needs to be setup as it pulls all over the road under acceleration so its not perfect.

just trying to find a fairly localish company who can set it up without wanting £250 for the pleasure lol

and ohlins - should have posted up a wanted before i bought these ;)

Is it primarily a road car with a bit of track action or vice versa? Do you know what your static loaded front and rear ride heights are at the moment? Idealy you want a bit of point on the car (rear higher than front to put an amount of angle on the body as a whole) to aid initial turn in. Do you have standard ARB's on it? Do you have adjustment for slow bound?

Setup is everything when it comes to suspension and to be honest with you its such an indepth subject and requires so much experience that £250 for someone to do a proper job is bloody cheap. The top setup guys are on over £1K a day.

Putting some point on the car may be all that is required to calm the pulling under throttle down a bit as this will reduce the front to rear weight transfer present when under throttle, if you have slow damp adjustment on the rear dampers then increasing this can also help combat initial weight transfer as the damper will control the slow compression of the spring with a little more prejudice.

Check what front and rear toe you are running as well, we run (pretty much) zero on the Clio racers but on a road car you're going to want a bit on the front for self centering and possibly a smidge on the rear as well (this will help keep the car straight under hard acceleration and stop it wondering).
