: Poorly GT dCi!

Apparently the 'whistle' that my car's had is due to a broken turbocharger, they suspect the bearings are failing. I'm dubious as it's had the whistle near enough since I bought it, and bearings when they go tend to last miles, not thousands of miles... And with no loss of performance? I dunno. Anyway, they're doing it under warranty (which is kind of them!) and I just wondered if anyone else had a whistle or figured that this wasn't quite the right diagnosis? 2 independent places have said that bearings don't "whistle" on their way out, or go for 24,000 miles making excessive noise, and that it's more likely to be a very small leak in the system.

Does the dCI not have a twin scroll turbo similar to the 225? The whistle is normal. Has it got louder with time then?

I believe it does have a twin-scroll turbo, and no it's not got any louder with time. Just the Renault service guy, whilst it was in for a rattle, chipped paint on the boot and marks on the alloy where their machine gripped it (which incidentally they aren't fixing the paint or wheel!) said the noise was 'excessive' and 'indicative of failure'. I think he's talking bull but as Renault are footing the bill I'm not pushing too hard (they know it's remapped) but I know it's cost me any discount on the service or any chance of getting the paint/wheel sorted.

ive had the turbo on mine replaced as the bearings in that went, it certainly didnt whistle when it went either, it made a right nasty noise, both turbos have whistled, old and new so i take it thats normal.

Well they are going to do it under warranty, so let them get on with it :)

Unfortunately they're using it as a get-out for replacing a wheel they damaged (it's "normal" for their machine to make marks on the inside of the wheel) and they can't "admit liability" for damaging the paintwork on the boot where they took it apart - despite it being in a completely inaccessible place unless you do try to dismantle it!

Ah well, just won't go back there.

I think a call to Renault CS is required
