So i registered a few months back but after having so many problems with the car :@ I'm back now

2 Tyres (michelin, 2 to do next pay day), driveshaft, cv boot (both sides), engine mount, front strut all replaced

Still need brake disks and brake pads (think im goin to get greenstuff ones)

But i'm now in a financial position to build a replica over the next few months. I know people may say (well its not a real renaultsport) well no its not, but if i could get insured on a R26 i would go out in 5 minutes and buy one, but i currently pay £2300 a year to be insured on my 1.9 DCI so I may as well make the most of it over the next 3/4 years till my insurance is minimal.

I haven't seen fittings and fixtures on a R26/225 so thats why i'm asking you guys, My plan is to get front and rear bumpers sprayed along with my door mouldings and put on the car. Is there anything i should know about this before doing it? (i.e extra parts I may need?)

After that, things like the silver dash, climatecontrol (if possible), speedo dials(if rev counter on the right) just anything to give it a "sporty" feel

Once cosmetics are done, will get it down to RS tuning or get angel tuning to come down to my place of work to remap it.

Any comments or ideas, please let me know

Jesus £2.3k a year for a DCI.

Modding it will put your insurance up even more though.

I would leave it how it is mate, maybe the re-map though.

It all depends on his insurence company. A fair few dont charge extra for cosmetic things. Im paying £1600 TPFT on my 1.5 dci!

Thats alot of money on insurance.

Got to start somewhere I suppose.

I had a Mk6 Escort 1.6 16v, very slow for my first car. That was £1300 Fully Comp when I was 19, but also had an accident and ban for my bike :(

nope as long as it dosnt add any performance your all good.

Its alot, but at 19 what can i do? I need a car, and something reliable, had a punto for a year, but that was £1500 to insure. Plus i got 3 points. lol, next year it drops massivly.

Depends on you company, but there ain't many out there that like mods.

Greenlight is good for mods though.

You need to tell what ever you do really, different bumpers = Yes

I'm only paying £600 for my 225 at 24, and thats with convictions.

I wouldn't even pay a £1000 now, but then again if I didn't have a mortgage why not.

Sh!t. I was driving an N reg 1.2 Clio Paris at the age of 19 and getting done on insurace then (£700 fully comp.). Would never have dreamed of paying £1600 let alone £2300. Stayed with Mk2 1.2 Clio then 1.5DCi 65 until I got my Meg in March. Now paying only £475 at the age of 25.

Something to be said for having a slow car!!!! Helps keep a clean license!

with bell

Drove my mums 1.4 106 (GROUP 9!!!) that was 1000 only 3rd party on my mums...

Been driving a year now, moneysupermarket brought bell car insurance out the cheapest. Had an accident last month, no damage to either car however her bumper magically broke and needed repairing so i lost my NCB i would've gained as well. :( so in november im going to be 19 when i get insured on it again.

Arnold clark do insurance at 2200 for 18-20 year olds on anything up to group 11 (any make or model) so might end up going with them

ok, so looking at buying the 225 exhaust off shiny, was wondering, people who have already put the exhaust on the DCI, what they had to do?

I have read somewhere DCI is a 2 bolt connection and the 225 is a 3 bolt, so need it welding at a garage? is this all that would need doing by the garage?

I think part of it is prices going up. My mate had a 1.1 escort bonus, was £1350 at 18. The car was only worth £200! So far i`v got no sp30`s on my license, just a "no L plate" thingy. Although i`v come close doing 30000ish miles a year.

I paid £1600 at 19 for my 2l mk2 ibiza, then my 1.8 20v turbo leon set me back £2500 at 20 with one year no claims and commuting on the policy. The 1.9 DCI will be just over £1000 then drop at Xmas when I am 21 and have 2 years no claims. This is all FC under my name with Bell.

I plan to put the RS kit on - I didn't realise it was sideskirts too? But I would tell the insurers, or ask about bodystyling - as if you crash and they needed to know, they will not pay out a penny.

Blimey! But did you start driving at 17 and have a full run of NCBs as I started much later so it looks excessive. I think some 21 year olds with 3 years NCB were paying just over £1000 for their Leon's.

you guys need to get back on this chap's topic lol

but as for insurance, I got insured on my 225 during the time i was 20 and am paying 1700 fully comp, but with an accident I feel that is actually not to bad for the type of car, next year this will drop dramatically

as for the bumpers, these should be a straight fit, but you need to make sure you get the phase 1/2 kit depending on what you have

I would personally save my money and just have a remap with front bumper maybe and wait for the day to own the real thing

You only need the back box, just get any exhaust company to chop your existing backbox off and weld the new one in place, shouldnt cost more than £40. you'd need the 225 rear bumeper tho, unless your wanting to cut big holes in the std back bumper. Doesnt make a huge difference other than cosmetic, its pretty quiet.

Powerflow said they'd make me a stainless one for about £250 depending on tail pipes.

As for fitting the sport bumpers, ive done it to mine, straight swap as long as you get the right phase bumpers, as the headlights, grills, covers under bonnet etc etc are different on the two models.

225/r26 wheels wont fit, due to them being 5stud, dci is 4.

Doubt fitting climate control would be an easy mod to do either, would of thought big £££'s to do

I thought the phase 2 meganes were the ones with the 'shakin that ass' advert - or have they got phase 1/2 specs also? I put a deposit down on a Meg and would also look to fit the RS bumpers.

Ask your insurance company about changing the bumpers. Last time I checked, Bell were pretty hard on modifying and you'll probably find a 1.9 looking like a 225 will cost more to insure than a standard 225. If you don't tell them, that's fraud and if you crash into me you'll not have a penny for the rest of your life...

14-05-2008, 13:16:06
A change of bumpers with Bell is classed as a full bodykit - if you explain it is a standard Renault kit fit on the higher spec cars they may run a quote for you to insure it as an optional extra body kit and a 'general' bodykit - but depends on who you speak with at the time. If this is the route you take, make sure you have clearly stated on the phone that it is a renault kit supplied on the higher spec cars - and that they have checked with a manager to make sure this info is correct; just incase you have a crash and they get funny..calls are logged!

Thats that gone out of the window then, not paying any more on my insurance, they wanted me to take a new policy out and cancel my current one

Xila
15-05-2008, 11:54:08
If you have 1 year NCB or more why not shop about with other insurers and get quotes for a bodykit? You're supposed to insure any interior mods aswell - cd players, subs, amps etc but I doubt anyone actually does unless they have a customised boot install with enough ICE to make 50cent cry!! So I wouldn't mention any dash colour changes or owt - have you tried Adrian Flux?

well i had an accident on 29th of february, middle aged 'posh' woman slammed on, exiting the M62 going up the exit ramp. Claimed there was a bird in the road... anyway i didnt have time to stop and hit her NO VISUAL DAMAGE so neither of us exchanged details (law states you don't have to), i went home and informed the police, 6 weeks later had a letter, one of those no win-no fee companies had made a claim, rear bumper broken apparently.

So she didnt even go through her insurance company and didnt claim for personal injury, just her bumper

There was no damage but the daft bint lost me my first NCB, can imagine how fuming i was as for next 5 years i have to put accident on my insurance

Hmm, I didn't think it was for 5 years was it? When I started driving Bell were by far the cheapest insurance company - but I heard they got in trouble for insuring younger lads at a low premium, only having alot of them make claims of some sort or another.

Performance direct quoted £1800 for a year on my Leon (current car) - and I think they only required info on any performance mods. Give them a try maybe!
