Hello all,
Today became the owner of a 2004 1.5 dci (80) 3dr dynamique.
Really impressed with the car, just one little problem, might be a big problem.

I drove the car from the auction house i bought it from, which is about 30 miles from my house, my dad followed me home all the way and he said when i got home that there was smoke constantly coming out my exhaust all the way back, it wasn't noticeable to me but my dad said it shouldn't be like that.

So was just wondering if anyone has had similar experience with this engine, or if anyone knows what the problem might be?

Thanks

Little bit of smoke occasionally is normal on a diesel. Shouldnt be continuous though. What colour is the smoke? Could be a bunch of things

The smoke looks like its white. i parked it up this morning and gave it some revs, then went round the back to have a look, and on the floor was a layer of black soot which looks to have come out with the smoke.

Black soot is normal too for a diesel, unburnt particulates. Anyway, take it on a drive and give it a good blast. Perhaps you might want to change the air filter initially. Before you bought it was it driven regularly or has it been sitting around?

I've got a Haynes manual for a Scenic that covers the 1.5 diesel so I'll take a look at what white smoke is when I get home and give you a list of things to check. I think white smoke is that it's not burning the fuel completely. How many miles has it done and whats the service hstory like?

Thanks for your help, I think it has been stood around for a while actually, looking at the paperwork i got with it, it looks like its not been run much at all since October 2007. She's done 43,000 miles and there is only the 1 stamp in the service book at around 20k. I've replaced the air filter and changed the oil and oil filter this morning.

You might want to do the fuel filter as well

Im off to the motor spares shop to get one this afternoon. Think i might get some of that redex diesel addative to clean my injectors then take it for a long drive tonight.

And of course your dCi 175 would have had a FAP filter to capture all the dirt :)

Just an udpate, got it all fixed today, the smoke was due to an injector not being fitted properly causing the diesel to not combust efficiently, so the smoke turned out to be unburnt diesel mixed in with the normal exhaust gasses. Got the injector removed, cleaned and refitted for £47 at a diesel specialist. Now she runs better than ever.
