: Mis-fire
richandgem 17-09-2008, 09:37:47 Forgive my stupidity but how do you know if a car is mis-firing?
We have a problem with the 182, when its on tick over the revs are constantly going up and down as if its going to stall, and then when you rev it it sounds likes it mis-firing but I'm not 100% sure as my experience with mis-firing is limited.
Would really appreciate any help you could give me thanks
krisey 17-09-2008, 09:39:31 If it sounds like an Impreza then its mis firing. Could be idle control valve, when blocked they cause the idle to peak and trof.
If you hold the revs at say 2K, does it sound okay then, or like a scoob?
richandgem 17-09-2008, 09:40:42 like a scoob, it wasn't smooth at all
oh the toxic fume light cam on btw
krisey 17-09-2008, 09:43:30 Mis fire then. Try making the sure HT leads are all on properly (while its switched off or with some thick gloves if running!!!!!)
If it still persists I would 1 by 1 take the HT leads off the plugs and start it, if it gets worse, put that lead back on, if it stays the same you've found the problem cylinder.
Then check if there is a current going to the HT lead using a screw driver, if so, whip the plug out and see if its sparking, if so then it just leaves fuel! which could mean buggered injector!
krisey 17-09-2008, 09:45:52 Sorry missed your point about the toxic light coming on, that should mean it will have logged a fault, easyest way to diagnose is to take it to be read I would of thought, rather than mucking about with doing the above!
richandgem 17-09-2008, 09:52:40 thanks for that mate, very useful
i have been having a read on cs to see if I can find anything, could it be caused by a faulty coil pack?
richandgem 17-09-2008, 09:56:31 just spoke to a friend at work and he is bringing in his diagnostic tool tomorrow so we can have a look.

yes could well be, do the clio's have independant coil packs for each cylinder like the megane? Could just be a case of needing a new one!

That should do the trick!
Good Luck
I reckon 99% it's a Coil Pack if it's on the 182.
I think Renault normally charge about £160-£200 if it's out of warrenty to do the work.
richandgem 17-09-2008, 10:58:52 are the coil packs easy to change I'm normally pretty competant with fixing cars
krisey 17-09-2008, 11:00:01 yes, if its the same at the megane its just a case of unclipping the cables and unbolting it and it comes off, then reverse to re-fit.
richandgem 17-09-2008, 11:07:54 just phoned our local stealer to get a price and quite surprised, £62 for a new pack which is cheaper than I thought it would be. Might pick one up tonight so when we diagnose it tomorrow we can stick it straight in if its the problem.
Would it be worth changing the plugs aswell?

wouldnt of thought you would need to change the plugs, only do them if they are due.
As said is isn't hard to change.
All i know is that when I sold my 172 the coil pack packed up and it cost the new owner about £160 to diagnose and replace at Renault.
Plugs are a little more tricky iirc the inlet manifold needs to come off and a few over things. I believe they are Platinum plugs and aren't due to the 5 years or 72k service anyway.
richandgem 17-09-2008, 12:05:34 £160 would sound about right for Renault to do it, about £50 diagnostic + part + labour.
The reason I asked about the plugs is coz I know someone whos coil pack was blown by a kippered spark plug. is it worth taking the risk for the sake of a few extra quid? The car has done 44K now, so its got a while yet before it technically needs new plugs
hmm not sure.
I'd price up the correct plugs and have a look into changing them, to be safe.
Don't think the are cheap plugs mind.
I know the Renault specialist I used recommended changing then with 36k service
richandgem 17-09-2008, 12:35:27 I shall have to ask bubbles if she had them done at the 36k service
krisey 17-09-2008, 12:51:02 those plugs are £££ they are the same as what was in my V6 laguna....
richandgem 17-09-2008, 12:55:15 apparently they are these

krisey 17-09-2008, 12:57:09 probably, and bear in mind u need 4, thats quite deer for plugs! and on the V6 i had six to replace :( plus is was an inlet off jobby!
richandgem 19-09-2008, 17:48:09 wah hay got it sorted this evening, after replacing the coil pack, spark plugs and fitting a set of magnecor leads the car is running again. but not just runing it fookin flys :)
I think that the lead has be on its way out for a while and it must have eventually blown the coil pack. Once I changed the coil pack and plugs the second cylinder sprung into life and the 3rd one was intermitant. With the new leads I have no error codes comin on the diagnostics and the car flys again :)
we thought it had been a bit sluggish but didn't think anything of it
All in all it cost us £170 which seems a lot but would have been double if it went into the local stealers
ClaneO 19-09-2008, 18:15:57 should that not be covered by warranty?
richandgem 19-09-2008, 22:38:31 its a few months out of warranty now mate. obviously the leads are meant to fail after 3 years and 2 months
Bubbles 21-09-2008, 20:42:15 Yey :D glad shes all back up and healthy again, well done Rich
6k? ;)
richandgem 22-09-2008, 08:55:16 lol after going out in it sat morning for a good run I definately couldn't sell it yet, now its running like it should again I remember why we love it so much :)
I just need to talk Gem into buying an LY R26 aswell :)
