: New Project - 172 'Super' Cup
Icarus 30-11-2008, 22:53:46 Purchased last weekend and I've stuck 700 miles on it since to check all was well and pick up the bits that needed doing.

Some fairly extensive modification planned for this one in the near future. BPM Racing Super Cup engine package so just a smidge over 200bhp with a bit of luck. My spec Gaz coil overs, battery in boot to accommodate the air box etc. etc.
Should end up being 200bhp/tonne with plenty of mid range clout and above all an absolute hoot to drive.
Base car was very cheap to, few dings but nothing worth worry about as this'll see the track very often!
Cheers

Naith 30-11-2008, 22:55:08 i heart you

Airbox - http://www.itgairfilters.com/images/raceair/ab80-mini.jpg
Externaly it'll look standard, a bit lower in track setup but thats about it. Big give aways will be brake cooling ducts where the fog lights are and a fairly large BMW CSL style induction port in the front bumper to feed the airbox.
Cheers
M
Icarus 30-11-2008, 23:19:48 Nope just some meaty cams, inlet manifold redesign, proper induction/filtration setup, mild head work and a low loss exhaust system. That'll be 200 - 206bhp.
Cheers

richandgem 01-12-2008, 08:02:10 cool, keep us posted on this little project mate.
think I might just leave the 182 with you to play with ;)
Sounds promising.
I miss me old 172 :(
You going to strip it at all?
I think Mark over on Cliosport his down to about 925kgs.
richandgem 01-12-2008, 11:01:31 925kgs wow. what does a 182 weight from standard?
Matty 01-12-2008, 11:05:36 Ick you are mental, can i ask first
I want a go.
925kgs wow. what does a 182 weight from standard?
I think a 182 is about 1100kgs ish.
I know the FF172's were around 1120kgs, but they have a full spare etc in the boot.
Icarus 01-12-2008, 12:01:13 The 182 exhaust is very, very heavy. Probably more than the full size spare! It's actualy an effort to pick the back box up!
Not going to strip my 172. The book weight for one is 1021KG's. The battery change will save 4KG's, airbox and associated bits around 500g, exhaust change 2KG's, tool tray out the boot 1.5KG's so all up that's about 8KG's which I'll trade if for some nicer front seats ;-)
Target is 200bhp/tonne and to do that I need 205bhp. If it falls a bit short I may have to dump the rear seats ;-) The plan with it is a very capable track car that can still be chucked down a B road at speed with only minor tweeks to the suspension.
It's going to be a six month project in total but I want to get the first stage of the engine mods completed over Xmas, possibly without the battery and airbox mods but base engine done with cams, exhaust etc. all on it. To be honest this one will be a bit of a ghetto build as I am going to use the one that's in their at the moment with fresh belts, tappets, cams, big end bearings and oil pump.
Suspension mods will be all complete by March including testing to determine the track/road setups and then bodywork and fresh full spec engine and box done by May.
Cheers

damn it didn't get in there quick enough ;)
Sounds like it will be a nice little car mate :)
ClaneO 01-12-2008, 12:11:20 exactly what i want in a track car, keep us posted as this is definately in my plans for the future, im even thinkin of downgrading my R26 to somethin a bit less to fund it!
Icarus 01-12-2008, 12:16:23 It's a track and B road car. I want it to be as good around the EVO Triangle as it is around Brands Hatch so I need to compromise slightly in some areas. I could make it quicker around track but then that'd ruin it for the road.
It's a good little project this one as obviously nearly all my engineering is race/track car! Trying to find some lighter speakers for the doors and some reclining buckets is quite a challenge LOL
Cheers

ClaneO 01-12-2008, 12:31:51 keeping the speakers?? bet you take them out if you cant reach the magic 200 bhp/tonne ;)
why you keeping the backseats in?? you take passengers??

Want it to be stealth. The rear seats aren't too heavy so rather than have bare metal I'd prefer to leave them in to minimise the chances of anyone noticing it might have been played with.

Matty 01-12-2008, 13:46:57 Put my seats back in yesterday and it does make a little bit of difference.

does it make a noticeable difference then? I was thinking about taking them out the 182

yeh, ur talking 4 stone aint ya give or take, it does change it for sure
conley 01-12-2008, 14:39:18 yeh, ur talking 4 stone aint ya give or take, it does change it for sure
The rear seats on a Ph1 172 are just 15Kg, so not as much to be gained on the 172/182 compared to a 225. No integral seat belt mechanisms.
Just dumping a 172 alloy spare and tool kit can save 18Kg.
It’s not just mass you have to accelerate, you also have to decelerate it and move it around in a non-linear direction (bends).
Naith 01-12-2008, 14:53:20 this is true, the weight in the rear of the clio 1*2 isnt that of the meg.
altho there was still an awful lot of bulk in the back of mattys 197!
**of topic the rear box on the 197/R27 must weigh near enough that of a house!!**
Icarus 01-12-2008, 15:21:16 It does! Cup exhaust saves around 12 kilos!!!!
Cheers
M
Matty 01-12-2008, 15:41:26 Yeah it does make more difference in the 197 to the 1*2's mine are only back on for December as im out lots and often have to give lifts and stuff. It makes more difference to the noise more than anything, it actually feels more stable with a little something over the rear wheels, not as much fun like.
krisey 01-12-2008, 15:49:28 Good stuff Icarus!
Icarus 01-12-2008, 19:09:25 First mod done this evening. 225 style flat blade wipers ;-)
Might not add any power but I can see in the rain now LOL
Diesel Kangoo van engine mounts ordered as well, or Group N mounts as some places seem to refer to them! Bits on their way from Earls to make some braided lines up and a bagged a new cambelt kit on the bay for 70 notes!
Cheers
M
Replacing mounts is a good start.
I replaced them on my 172 along with the gearbox mounts, made a world of difference.
Icarus 02-12-2008, 11:20:02 Gearbox mount is going spherical bearing ;-)
Cheers
M
Nice one.
Thats the great thing about the 172, once it's set-up properly and everything is how it should be, it makes a great car to drive as standard
MrTurner 02-12-2008, 11:38:55 God you're a legend :) If you're taking it to a track, I'd defo slip you a few quid for a few laps..

It might end up being the BPM Driver training car!
New gear linkage being done for it as well to remove some of the slop in the standard one. Not exactly a short shift but a less sloppy shift ;-)
Cheers

shinyautos.com 02-12-2008, 12:26:40 Mate, in a totally non gay gordans kind of way, 'I Love you'
Icarus 02-12-2008, 13:28:31 Its in the body shop at the moment having a few bits of paint touched up so it'll even look fairly respectable ;-)
Cheers
