Renault has taken the wraps off the R29 design on which its 2009 world championship hopes rest.
The former champion team is determined to be a title contender this year, having been buoyed by Fernando Alonso's late-season charge in 2008, which yielded back-to-back victories in Singapore and Japan.
The car, which will test for the first time at Portimao today, features new sponsorship from Total and a revised livery.
It also features more aggressively sculpted rear bodywork than other 2009 cars revealed so far.
Alonso and Nelson Piquet stay on as race drivers.
By the end of last season, Renault had closed the gap to the front-runners significantly, despite a horsepower deficit.
Engineering director Pat Symonds told itv.com/f1 that the team could still be at a slight disadvantage with straightline speed.
Renault had disbanded most of its F1 engine department when the engine freeze was instigated, so could not exploit the loopholes its rivals found – resulting in an estimated deficit of 35bhp at one stage last season.
Changes to the exhaust system and improved fuel from Elf closed the gap, and Symonds reckoned that a rules break from the FIA had allowed Renault to claw back half of the remaining deficit over the winter.

The team has also confirmed that GP2 star Romain Grosjean will become its primary test and reserve driver this year.

The nose of the R29 looks a bit Lego to me, but otherwise should be a promising car.

yeh deliberate iirc, they have gone hardcore into focusing the flow to the rear wing, sidepods are different too.

could go one way or another, just hope its not negative

The sidepods are weird

I think they went on a Dieppe tour and spent too much time watching the writhing robots that spray our cars.

I think it looks awful next to the new Ferrari. But I hope its special as I already have money on Alonso winning the title.

Not so sure (either way)

Its either going to work very, very well or not at all. The BMW looks right and in Kubica's hands, probably will be. The McLaren looks a shambolic mess at the front.

I'm shocked to see the electrical warning decals and some of the mechanics having to wear rubber gloves for safety. What about the marshals? Its incompatible to wear rubber gloves for their insulation properties and nomex for the fire resistance - Mosley really is a fool. One of the teams hinted that their KERS was somewhere round 10-15 amperes @ 200 V DC. That's nasty, potentially the fatal variety of nasty. As for putting the lithium batteries under the fuel cell, its kafka
