RENAULT LAUNCHES CARMINAT TOMTOM - FIRST FULLY INTEGRATED NAVIGATION SYSTEM FOR LESS THAN £500

http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/Blackrat230/R_4364.jpg

Ever since the creation of its Atlas research programme as far back as 1982, Renault has stood out as a pioneer in the development of affordable automotive navigation systems for more than 25 years. The first road tests of the Carminat system with the Renault Safrane date back to 1994, while the following year saw Renault become the first carmaker to market a fully-integrated satellite navigation system. Since then, ongoing work on successive Carminat systems has been guided by a will to take this feature of modern-day mobility further forward still, with the accent on safety.

Carminat landmark dates:

1994: First road tests of the Carminat system on Renault Safrane.

1998: Renault Laguna equipped with an integrated, independent Carminat navigation system (static maps, large colour screen).

2000: Carminat Navigation et Infotrafic heralded the evolution towards real-time guidance with the transmission of road traffic information by radio, and proposed alternatives routes. Available as standard equipment on upper-range models, or optionally on other Renault vehicles.

2002: Dynamic, optimised navigation, with journey times recalculated as a function of delays, etc.

2005: Renault launches Carminat Navigation and Communication, incorporating traffic information, Bluetooth® telephony and audio functions.

2009: Launch of Carminat TomTom®, the first integrated navigation system that can be updated via the internet, for less than £500. The affordable Carminat TomTom® system is available for Clio 2009, New Mégane, New Scénic and New Grand Scénic.

Carminat TomTom®: affordable, advanced navigation:

-user-friendly and ready-to-run as soon as the car is started,

-very competitively priced at less than £500,

-easier to read: large 5.8-inch (14.7cm) colour screen integrated in the dashboard. 3D bird view or 2D road-map display, with manual and automatic zoom,

-reliable navigation incorporating traffic information and alternative routes, speed camera locations, speed limits, a large number of points of interest and a wide range of customisable functions.

The best of two worlds

The advantages of integrated systems:

robust and durable,
practical, easy to read and safe,
high quality GPS signal reception thanks to a specific aerial, with radio aerial used for the reception of traffic information,
precise (vehicle-sourced data),
sound and voice functions transmitted via the vehicle's own audio system,
inherent anti-theft properties.

The advantages of removable systems:

competitive price,
updatable map data and speed camera locations (depending on country),
customisable (POIs, voice, vehicle, icons, journey preparation, etc.),
personal data saveable,
can be used in conjunction with the Renault TomTom® internet platform (MapShare®).

Carminat TomTom, the first updatable integrated navigation system for less than £500

Carminat TomTom® combines the expertise of Renault, the pioneer of in-car navigation with Carminat, with that of the leading producer of removable navigation systems. With more than 25 years of experience as a major player in the world of integrated navigation systems, Renault once again breaks new ground with the introduction of an advanced integrated product at a price of less than £500. To achieve this, Renault has teamed up with TomTom®, the world leader in personal navigation solutions. TomTom®'s experience of removable navigation systems and associated services has been invaluable in meeting both the exacting brief of an original equipment automotive system and the demands of customers. The result is Renault's advanced and modern all-new Carminat TomTom® GPS system.

Large 5.8-inch colour screen with integrated controls.
In addition to the fact that they offer greater protection against theft, integrated systems continue to stand out as the safest option in an accident. They are easy to read, too, thanks in this case to a 5.8-inch (14.7cm) colour screen which is positioned high up on the dashboard to minimise the time the driver's eyes are off the road. The availability of 2D and 3D 'bird view' displays – with or without automatic zoom – make itineraries easy to follow.

The screen itself doubles up as a central multimedia display, including the automatic display of data and information concerning the radio, telephone address books (when combined with Bluetooth®), and MP3 player music playlists (albums and song titles) when employed with the Plug & Play function.

Vocal navigation instructions are transmitted via the vehicle's own loudspeakers which are in turn controlled by the steering wheel-mounted fingertip remote control.

Carminat TomTom® comes with a remote control function (or joystick, depending on vehicle) for quick, safe use of the system.

Carminat TomTom® meets Renault's exacting brief

Renault's demanding brief called for a robust, durable system capable of standing up to:

- extreme hot and cold temperatures,

- sea mist,

- vibrations,

- knocks,

- electromagnetic fields.

To enable Carminat TomTom® to fulfil its function as an original equipment feature, 70 per cent of its components are specific. As a fully-integrated part of the car, Carminat TomTom® benefits from Renault's vehicle warranty.

Advanced navigation functions

The roof-mounted exterior aerial ensures reliable GPS signal reception. The combination of a high-precision gyroscope and the speed sensor linked to the ABS brakes delivers reliable navigation at all times, even when the GPS signal is temporarily lost (in a tunnel, for example). The system's advanced performance is founded on:

- precise, updatable maps,

- speed restrictions, fixed speed camera location alerts (depending on country), excessive speed warning, risk zone warnings (schools, etc.),

- real-time traffic information (congestion, accidents, etc.) with proposed alternative itineraries,

- journey planning incorporating points of interest selected by the user (66 categories, and customisable),

- precise, reliable navigation at all times thanks to the system's exterior aerial and vehicle-sourced data,

- compatible with other Renault 2009 multimedia systems (audio, connectivity): Classic and Arkamys® audio systems, Plug & Music, Bluetooth®, telephony, audio streaming, etc.

Carminat TomTom®, updatable and customisable

Carminat TomTom® is easy to update. Maps are stored on a 2Go SD card. By using the card on a computer linked to the internet, customers can access a long list of on-line services. It is then easy to:

- update and upgrade the navigation system thanks to free or payable downloads: maps, speed camera locations, points of interest, customisation of certain functions (voice, 3D vehicle icon, colours, etc.),

- order maps of other countries on-line (2Go SD cards can also be purchased),

- share, correct and save map information using MapShare®,

- pre-trip planning with Google search®,

- obtain e-guides, tuition, etc.

For those owners whose computer does not have an SD card function, Renault even provides a USB-type SD reader.

Carminat TomTom® covers some 40 countries in western and eastern Europe and Scandinavia, plus Turkey and South Africa. These on-line services can all be found at www.renault-multimedia.com, on Renault's different national websites (www.renault.(country)) or by using the Renault TomTom Home® programme on the SD card.

A rapidly expanding market

Navigation systems are the most frequently specified item of equipment requested by customers, whatever the segment. Price continues to stand out as a decisive parameter in this market which is expanding at a steady 20 per cent per year.

Of the 31 million navigation systems sold in Europe in 2008:

- 10 per cent were sold directly by carmakers (chiefly integrated systems),

- 80 per cent were removable navigation systems,

- 10 per cent were systems for mobile phones or PDAs.

These figures highlight the market's potential and show the way forward for carmakers.

Carminat TomTom® will be available from this spring in 25 countries. This new GPS navigation system is compatible with the new radio range available for Clio 2009. Carminat TomTom® will shortly be available for the majority of New Mégane, New Scénic and New Grand Scénic customers, too, and its availability is poised to be extended to other vehicles in the future.

whats stopping you just buying the car without the tomtom & cut a £200 model into the dash? The picture looks like they did just that?

Sometimes words (the press release) tell more than a picture.....

The system's integrated to the car's electronics (audio through the car's own speakers, steering wheel fingertip controls, wheel speed signal from the ABS brakes, radio info visible on the screen etc.). You'd need some serious skills to incorporate those in your £200 hack-in-the-dash jobbie.... ;D The press release says 70% of the parts a Renault-specific.

But you're right in that as pure navigation's concerned, a stand-alone £200 TomTom works almost as fine.

What bothers me is the display is such an unsightly lump on top of the dash. I much prefer the Laguna where the display sits beatifully integrated in the dash.

would never buy it. tomtom looks so silly with its C64 graphics. I rather hook up a navigon based PNA and I'm done.

i like the idea of it, and would be tempted to have it as an option if it looked better. It just looks like a stand alone system has been glued onto the dash. hhmmmmm, a little more thought was needed imo
