: Fitting R26.R Spoiler to a Sport Hatch?

Hi All,

I am new to the Forum, so best start off with a Hello :happyhappy:

I have recently purchased a 2006 Extreme Blue Megane Sport Hatch 130 DCi Dynamique. It has the 17" Steppe Renault alloy wheels fitted, and I am really pleased with it. It has replaced a Seat Leon Cupra Replica that was my pride and joy - but quite thirsty! A change of work place, and an extended commute meant it was time to change to an oil burner.

My question is, I want to fit an R26.R spoiler to my car, but want to know what's involved before I purchase the spoiler and get it sprayed. Can anyone enlighten me? Does it involve drilling holes in my boot? I have heard that you can bond it to the boot, but can this be done by bonding it directly to the existing paintwork? Will it damage the paintwork doing this? So many questions hey!

Any help you can provide would be great. Any pictures of anyone else who has fitted one of these to a Sport Hatch would also be great.

Cheers

Kev

Hello and welcome firstly :)

You don't need to drill holes or screw the new spoiler to the back... You will need to fill the hole the original one left if it's the same as the one from the R26 / 225.

Had mine done a while a go, get it done at the right place and it'll look great.

Cheers Ian,

My car currently doesn't have a spoiler fitted, as the Dynamique doesn't come with one as standard. I therefore do not have the hole from a previous spoiler to fill - which should make fitting the R26.R spoiler even easier I guess.

Is the bonding kit easy enough to use? I assume it comprises a couple of sticky foam pads or something similar with adhesive on both sides?

Do you have any photo's of when yours was fitted, and prior to fitting etc?

Cheers

Kev, mine came with two rather large adhesive pads, someone else mentioned they had to get them as another part number.

Thanks for the pics Ian, the original RS rear spoiler is quite understated, so the R26.R spoiler is a great upgrade in my opinion, and looks superb on your Liquid Yellow example. That really has to be one of, if not the best colours for the RS Meganes IMHO.

Thanks again for your help.

it costs £125

it comes with fitting instructions etc.

You can just bond it to the back of the car instead of drilling holes.

It comes in an off shade of Glacier White ;)

Nah, it's not sprayed, that's an additional cost.

Wait for MisterC to come along, you can't PM as a basic user. He might be able to help you. :)

I find it quite strange that the very small original RS spoiler (or boot lip) required a bolt to hold it in place, but the much larger, and no doubt heavier R26.R spoiler relies completely on two adhesive pads, and does away with any mechanical fixings!

I'm not sure I would like the idea of having to have this hole welded if I were changing the spoiler (fortunately my car doesn't have a spoiler at present so there aren't any holes to fill). Mainly because the heat from welding can locally degrade the metal being welded, and make it more prone to corrosion. Providing a decent paint job is provided over the "repair" I guess corrosion shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the help with this everyone :)

The r26r spoiler is bonded on to my boot, been on for nearly two years, i can quite happily lean on it with 13clem and it doesnt even flex in the slightest, not sure what its stuck on with but its doing the job.

can a r26r owner maybe check if their spoiler got bolts to fit or not?

Thanks for this - that provides me with enough confidence in the quality of the adhesive pads supplied with the spoiler then :shiny[1]:

Many thanks for your helps.

The R26 spoiler is fixed with bolts, one or two at either end, the pads supplied with the spoiler are mearly a mounting point for the spoiler and not an alternative fixing method, my spoiler is fixed with some other type of glue or what ever it may be that the body shop used, after fitting it they gave me back the bag with the pads and the bolts etc, it is certainly not just bonded via the sticky pads, i would imagine that it would fall off if you put your foot down if you relied on these pads as a sole means of fixing.

Ive never properly checked but ill have a look when i get home :)

Thanks for confirming the fixing arrangement - do you mean that the spoiler is fixed using one hex bolt at each end, or two at each end?

Are you fitting the spoiler yourself, or getting it done by a garage / maindealer?

Cheers

just as an update i found on fitting my spoiler that the existing 3 drill holes for the standard spoiler dont match the 4 holes required for the r spoiler so you will have to drill the 4 hole's which is easy enough and the spoiler comes with a template for drilling the 4 holes its now all fitted and i used a gromet to blank off the midle hole and touched up the rest with paint and then silicon sealer
