: Torque steer
rosscoe 25-07-2006, 20:16:00 Hi guys, Im just about to make the jump and get a 225. I have a cup on 3 day test drive at the mo and have fallen completely head over heels. Kinda concerned at the level of torque steer though? Quite scary . Is this normal?
Also not too fussed for the blue interior on the cup. Am I right in thinking that I could order the 225 which has an all black interior and spec the cup chassis as an option?
Your advice would be appreciated - dealers are a hassle sometimes.
cheers - and great site!
BlackRat250 25-07-2006, 20:35:42 A lot of people are going for the Full Fat with cup chassis. Bit more expensive, but comes with all the toys. The torque steer is a bit of a problem, but you get use to it. Its a lot better on the cups.
BlackRat250 25-07-2006, 20:36:08 Oh and welcome to the site. Feel free to ask loads and loads of questions.
Al225 25-07-2006, 21:16:27 Welcome, and take the plunge.
Not sure about the torque steer, find it quite civilised, when compared to our original 172, which was always trying to break your wrists.
andy bassett 25-07-2006, 22:35:12 welcome along bud,
and honest, give it a week and you wont even feel it,
its all the knocking you want to worry about
only joking, you will love it.
darth megane 26-07-2006, 00:20:18 Welcome to the site and as peeps have said you only notice it if you have your traction turned off
shinyautos.com 26-07-2006, 00:48:19 Welcome along mate!
The torque steer is only a handfull when yo first get it, give it a few hours and you adjust your type of driving and you won't even notice!
mike_d225 26-07-2006, 07:54:55 Think your question has been answered, so welcome to the site
Pickle 26-07-2006, 09:45:00 Hi
I agree with earlier post, find my megane a lot less of a handful than my 172
meggerman 26-07-2006, 10:09:48 are the meganes effected by axel tramp ?
shinyautos.com 26-07-2006, 10:13:04 are the meganes effected by axel tramp ?
Yea funny you should say that, i had this old bloke asleep under there last night, once i told him what for he said he won't come back again, so that should be gone now!
cactusbob 26-07-2006, 10:26:21
WTF is axel tramp?
shinyautos.com 26-07-2006, 10:31:50
WTF is axel tramp?
I think its if you hit a bump at some speed the steering wheel goes into an uncontrolable shake until the vehicle slows down...
What i did have the other day though that was a bit scary to say the least, giving it some welly around some twistys then as i slowed down for the round-a-bout the car started swerving from side to side as i was breaking, not the best feeling!
Styled it out though!
cactusbob 26-07-2006, 11:08:54 round-a-bout the car started swerving from side to side as i was breaking, not the best feeling!
That's not swerving thats drifting
shinyautos.com 26-07-2006, 11:11:16 probably looked good from outside but was bloody scary from inside, my mate nearly made a whole in the passenger footwell trying to press the imaginary brake!
cactusbob 26-07-2006, 11:14:51 Did your ESP come on to help you out?
shinyautos.com 26-07-2006, 11:16:09 nope!
Well i don't think so i was concentrating on not hitting the curb or the merc coming up the hill!
cactusbob 26-07-2006, 11:17:23 I've noticed that under hard braking they do seem to wobble a bit
shinyautos.com 26-07-2006, 11:19:38 Bloody cars! :)
cactusbob 26-07-2006, 11:21:05 Yeah but we love 'em anyway. I think we should call it a "performance characteristic"
shinyautos.com 26-07-2006, 11:22:21 Yea mate thats the one!
I think its only when there is a lot of weight on one side of the car and you brake hard, like going around a bend and slamming on the anchors.
Thats what mine did anyway
cactusbob 26-07-2006, 11:23:33 Sounds about right :D
shinyautos.com 26-07-2006, 11:25:36 Now i know just to power through the bend and sod slowing down, i'd rather drift than wobble!
meggerman 26-07-2006, 11:27:00 axel tramp is the sensation you experienced in the 172/182 when flooring in 1st where traction was limited i.e wet roads the whole can bangs violently and it sounds like the engine is going to fall out all cars suffer more or less but the clio suffers very badly and it doesnt help pushing 180bhp through the small 16" front wheels of a light car.
Al225 26-07-2006, 11:36:04 Yep had the axel tramp thing once, on damp roads, didn't sound or feel very good. Won't be doing that again
Like shiny I've also had a bit of arse wobbling under braking in a straight line, was doing over a ton at the time, hit the brakes hard but not enough to get the ABS going. Not sure if the numerous safety gismos helped, but was very disconcerting
Diegza 26-07-2006, 18:20:50 Back to the subject....Welcome along mate :D
I think that is clear that if you need to know something, just ask
Cheers from Mexico
Welcome Rosscoe - don't get too worried about the torque steer - as others have said, you adapt to the car's characteristics very quickly
Pickle 27-07-2006, 13:10:49 cool, wish we had a photo of your face at that moment
pjdt77 28-07-2006, 16:54:15 welcome along m8, torque steer not really a problem as the bos n girls say. You will notice it a lot more if you get a remap, but once again you learn to cope with it by adapting your driving style. As for you Shinny, dont brake hard in a front wheel drive car on a corner especially if the arse is hanging out, the best thing to do and it seems un natural is floor the throttle the front wheels shoot off ad pull the back into line. (basicaly thats it, wont go into full explanation or it will get boring) cheers Phill
denty225 31-07-2006, 21:45:23 Welcome mate. All your questions will be answered here. As you can see they often go off on a tangent!
Mine dances a bit under hard braking aswell, had thid the other day when a donkey jag pulled out infront of me when i was doing ***mph! Must say it was the first time the brakes have impressed me. Not the best ever but did the job.
