: Megane 250 Test Drive
Duzza 25-02-2010, 22:52:39 Got one lined up on Sunday morning. Looking forward to it but going to need some convincing to change from my Golf GTi Edition 30.
How have people found the build quality on Renaults recently? My mrs has a Twingo GT which seems reasonably well bolted together if a litlle plasticy!
Also, how are people finding the service from Renault dealers? I had a couple of Peugeots many years ago and the dealer service was laughable. I later moved on to beemers whos dealer service is impecable. VW's is mid range I would say, although lowe mid range really!
When I spoke to the Renault dealer he was confident of a getting a 250 order through in 6 weeks (depending on spec). If I want a Golf R or Scirocco R I would be lucky to have it before August :dazed002:
BlackRat250 25-02-2010, 22:57:22 Hi mate and welcome to the site.
The RenaultSport Build quality is really good, over standard Renault models as they are built in their own factory and have more time spent on them being built.
But the 250 is in a different league. You would not believe your sitting in a Renault !! The build quality is that good !
As for the servicing. This is the site to find out. Some very very good stealers out there, and some very poor ones as well. I use Wests @ Bedford, which is about 30 odd miles from me and have a local stealer near me. Id rather travel to have my baby looked after, than leave it with some stealer i don't trust !
As for parting with your Golf GTI, if you get to drive the car properly on the test drive, id say bye bye golf !

Cheers for that.
I suspect the only aspect the 250 will dissapoint on is the gearbox. It's a problem when you are used to the VW/Audi DSG box, you can't really improve on that!
BlackRat250 25-02-2010, 23:02:12 No that is true !!
RENNO 25-02-2010, 23:04:01 its a very good box in the 250.
Duzza 25-02-2010, 23:12:35 its a very good box in the 250.
but can you change gear without taking your hands off the wheel? ;)
TuftySi 26-02-2010, 00:08:12 DSG Edition 30 is a very nice car and a cut above my MkV GTI. Be interesting to hear your comments after the test drive.
I was worried about the interior being a bit wacky French and plastic... but was pleasantly surprised. Still prefer VW interiors .. but its not bad at all (especially with leather).
Was a very close call between one of these and a Scirocco for me.... but what I'm getting with this car compared to what I would get from VW (Scirocco or GTI) for the same money is a joke.
Renault should put the price up! ;)
Oh - and my missus has a Twingo GT as well ! :)
jaybyme 26-02-2010, 06:57:15 I would imagine a well equipped Golf R would cost the same as a RS250 and Twingo Gt put together.
I know in Germany it would cost more !

I reckon on a well equiped one, you'd get the 250 and 2 Twingo GT's!

I agree, hence looking away from VW.
The pricing of both the Scirocco R and particularly the Golf R is ludicrous. You can get a nearly new TTS for the same kind of money. Mental.
brooxy10985 26-02-2010, 09:25:49 250 build quality is second to none
Duzza 26-02-2010, 09:59:07 250 build quality is second to none
I'd be suprised if anyone could be so confident until we have seen one with say 10-15,000 miles on it and the list of issues, rattles etc.
BlackRat250 26-02-2010, 10:46:53 Im very confident ! My last Megane had no issues at all and i had that for 3 years.
RENNO 26-02-2010, 12:21:09 but can you change gear without taking your hands off the wheel? ;)
the 250 is very much a drivers car.cars with them type of boxes give a different kind of driving experience. It depends what you like really. The equivalent VW is going cost a hell of a lot more once its been speced up.hope you enjoy test drive.
Duzza 26-02-2010, 17:25:15 Well I've specced one up in case I like it :o
Sport 250, probably in Oyster or white
18" Keza alloys (replacing 18" tyres is expensive enough without going to 19s plus I'm not sold on the 19s at all)
Renaultsport Cup Chassis Pack (minus Recaros)
* Red brake callipers
* Chassis Cup
* Limited slip differential
* Seat height & incline adjustment
Renaultsport Visibility Pack
* Auto levelling headlights
* Electric folding heated door mirrors
* Bi-Xenon headlights
* LED daytime running lights
* Electrochrome rear view mirror
Whats the situation with the 'emergency spare wheel'? Surely thats an essential. A bit like the 'emergency' seat belts and the 'emergency' windscreen? Why is it an option?
Have I missed anything people feel is essential? I'm not having the Recaros as I prefer the look of the std leather seats, I'm also over 30 now (just) so I don't think I can get away with them without looking like I'm having an early mi-life :shiny[1]:
Meg250Ry 26-02-2010, 20:00:06 Renault sport monitor but I spec'd the sat nav
In place of the emergency spare wheel you will get tyre foam instead so cant really see why you would need to spec a emergency spare wheel unless your alloy was to oblitrate on a B road blast

The emergency spare wheel is cheaper than 1 one of the tyres a can of foam will ruin so Ill go for the spare!
Didn't know foam was the alternative but I did suspect
Meg250Ry 26-02-2010, 20:09:11 The emergency spare wheel is to get you home like tyre foam?
Im right in thinking the emergency spare is a steel?

I'm sure it is but foam will wreck the tyre. Putting it in the boot and taking it to a garage to have puncture repaired wont.:)
mattler 26-02-2010, 21:25:57 Got one lined up on Sunday morning. Looking forward to it but going to need some convincing to change from my Golf GTi Edition 30.
:
I test drove an edition 30 and TBH it was totally lifeless and unresponsive compared to its peers. I also dont buy into the whole "German Reliability" thing so ~I guess the smart move in this category would be the Megane as the only other car that tickles is the VXR and that feels thrown together!
RENNO 26-02-2010, 22:04:36 RS monitor is a must

where you getting the test drive? in Leicester?
poobah 27-02-2010, 11:18:46 I've just been to see the new 250 at the altrincham dealership. I have to say that I'm a little disappointed.
Sure the build quality and interior looks great and initially the outside looks ok but on closer inspection the exterior design is so fussy. Lots of small panels, edges, conflicting angles, awkward shapes. I'm not sure if it was the black paint and black wheels that didn't do it any favours? Might it look better in a more sympathetic colour?
I won't write it off just yet, but it seemed far from a design classic. Pity, as l was excited to finally see it in the flesh.
poobah 27-02-2010, 13:47:32 Actually, ignore everything l just said. I just went back for a second look and have changed my mind. Looks great.
I must have been grumpy and blind this morning!
poobah 27-02-2010, 15:03:16 Here's the one l've been sniffing round in Altrincham. Apparently it's being registered as a demo next week fr anyone in the area wanting test drives.

No, Renault Leicesters demo hasn't arrived yet.
Sutton Patks has though.
ClaneO 28-02-2010, 10:32:31 Back on blackvader style, looks sh*t hot to me!

That looks cracking, scruffy has got a very nice car coming :)
Rocket 28-02-2010, 12:00:54 Black on black does look good from those photos poobah. I've yet to see black on red in the flesh, think this will look good too.
andy182 28-02-2010, 12:13:32 I like that.... Mine is the same but with the optional 19 wheels.. and that is a cup mine a standard 250. Love black cars... not the best to clean.. but SO worth it...
scruffty 28-02-2010, 12:15:44 That looks cracking, scruffy has got a very nice car coming :)
Yeah that does look good :D thanks Denty :) except no-one knows when / if / how it's coming :) :) :)
Duzza 28-02-2010, 12:55:53 Well I get there to find they can't get the 250 out of the showroom due to having a refurb and the large doors have been blocked up. Typical service I expected tbh. Espescially as I'd traveled a 40 mile round journey.
Anyway had a look round the car. They have an oyster grey ff with LEDs and 19s. Overall the cars stunning from the outside, sits great in the grey. The interior is OK, I was disapointed by the flimsy feel of some aspects like the centre arm rest and the glove box but an obvious improvement over other models I've seen.
Rescheduled the test drive to Tuesday.

Duzza 02-03-2010, 11:01:56 Still no news on when I can get in this damn car. Almost as if they aren't that keen to sell one.
I'm almost decided on a FF in black with the Keza Alloys, LED's and Anthracite ID kit, ala:

TuftySi 02-03-2010, 21:41:23 I've ordered an oyster grey because my GTI is black and I wanted a change..... but imo that (black, Keza and anthracite pack) is the best 250 combo. Stunning :)

Having black as my GTi is grey :)
dangerdaz 03-03-2010, 10:44:39 I really `hate` those 19in alloys...yukk...
Duzza 03-03-2010, 11:04:31 Finally I'm in it on Friday at 2pm.
BlackRat250 03-03-2010, 11:20:35 Mate, if you wanted one sooner. Speak to Andy@wests mate. Well worth speaking to him about the car anyway as he is giving some good discounts.

I'll certainly talk to Wests when I know I definately want one. Can't really find the time to drive down to Bedford to get a 10 minute drive in the car though.
BlackRat250 03-03-2010, 11:36:51 True, probably get a lot longer than 10 minutes though !! ;)
Duzza 03-03-2010, 11:53:15 True, probably get a lot longer than 10 minutes though !! ;)
:) I'll get more than that on Friday if they expect to discuss a deal with me.
Slightly impatient as I know I'm already looking at May delivery, probably June!
BlackRat250 03-03-2010, 11:55:52 Well worth it though !! I order mine in December and it looks like its due in April !! Getting itchy feet now !

I bet. No feeling quite like collecting a brand new car. Unless it's a Fiat, their delaers seem to be able to take the shine of just about everything.

thats sutton park coventry then, i had a test drive booked for last saturday and i got a call in the morning to say they couldn't get it out the showroom so they knew then, think its gavin i'm dealing with.
need to rebook it myself, have no idea what seats i would want though, the normal ones don't quite offer enough support compared to the recaros in the R26 but the 250 recaros looks a bit narrow and uncomfortable, but i've not sat in any yet, although i am quite wide.....
loving the colour and wheels on the car they have though, stunning. ONly thing its missing is cup pack and xenons.

jason2_uk 07-03-2010, 14:33:07 yeah i think that is gonna be the colour/wheels combo i go for.. with regards to the recaros, they are quite a snug fit, and I'm average enough size.

Yes that's right SP Cov.
I left on Friday with a quite poor deal on the table I felt, which they tried very hard to close me down on there and then. They even got borderline rude at one point.
Unfortunately the guy who I dealt with knew less about the car than me (I'd never sat in 1 before). Didn't know what spec the demo was. Didn't know what tax band it was. Didn't know how to work the RS monitor. Didn't know how to turn the radio on! In fact he was more interested in knowing how my car worked.
I'm not suprised by their own admission they've only sold one 250 so far.

I hated the 19's at first but in the flesh they look much better. I've nearly convinced myself to spec them now! I think will grow on people personally.

was the test drive good? the guy said he would take me on a good route, although i'm less inclined to call them back now if they are going to do the hard sell as I HATE that, especially being in sales indirectly myself, i do hate pushy salesman.
The guy knew a little about the car (gavin), but he did get a bit of the standard and optional spec wrong when i was asking him, which was frustrating.
I guess thats why my last two cars have been from llloyds tsb carselect, as i just ring someone up, place my order, they deliver from a dealer (which has funniily enough been coventry both times) and i get none of the hassle.

To be fair, yes. They have a good route which includes a roads, b roads and a small patch of motorway. About a 20-30 minute route. Will defo tell you what you need to know.
Gavin seems a decent guy and was originally dealing with me. Certainly more clued up than the guy I ended up dealing with. The product knowledge in general is very poor though. In fact I never got any information from them, it was all self researched hence knowing more than them. They were slightly annoyed when I pointed out all the errors in their 'bible' price guide.
I did do a deal with them in the end but only because it eventually knocked the spots off anything anybody else could do.
They are in the midst of a full refit so sense they need the business. I ended up getting a deal £1k better than anyone else could offer but it was hard fought and I walked out twice.

I bought my r26 from carselect, they did a brill cash deal. Mine came from oldham renault. Brilliant service.
