i'm nearly due some tyres on my .R, should i stick with the R888? or is there better for about the same sorta money? i was quite pleased with the performance of the toyos, just dont seem to last :yes[1]:
:)

not got any but as far as I know these are meant to last quite a bit longer than the 888's

Yokohama Advan Neova AD08

.... not sure if they are as grippy though .... but they sure are pretty .... tempted to put them on my R26.

i would go for yoko A048's they grip better than the R888's and last longer and they dont cost much more they also seame to work well on the r also i found they gave a performance advantage over the R888's

Anyone ever tried the Dunlop Direzza or the Federal RSR's?

Need a new set myself.

some one else told me Dunlop done a very good R888 contender!?

Yes that's the Direzza, It is meant to last longer than the 888.

From experience (on another car) the dunlops last alot longer although it's hard to conclusively test from that point of view but that seems to be the general views from car clubs etc.

I really rate the yoko ad08 been on a friends m3 track car for some time now and they have barely worn after many many trackdays.

They're the one's i'm thinking of going for. Seem to offer more in terms of wet weather performance also.

Go for them poobah good in the wet, the m3 has done 15k on them and there's still lots of tread left.

Friend could match his laptime set on r888s with these fitted on a test day.

I'd second that. Running my R on them and did Oulton Park last November. They felt every bit as good as the R888s and kept going all day long.

"YOKO AD08" seems to getting the thumbs up, its a lot of money to put tyres on the .R so i think i'll try a tyre that people seem to like on here(and have experienced)! any one bought any recently to give me a idea of price?

adam123

toyos were 160+vat yokos 140+vat

Russ_Ellis

£140 + vat seems cheap .... I only found them at £180 odd ..... any ideas were to get them at £140 ? ....

Ad08s on mine now,, they have done a couple of thou so far and they are barely even scuffed :) 8mm of thread ftw lol

I paid 150 each for them.

Russ_Ellis
19-01-2011, 14:50:14
anyone able to point me in the direction of where I can get them at £150 a boot !?

Steve Saunders

Hmmm, these AD08's sound pretty good. Would be nice to have a good all-round tyre, as I only do 3 or 4 track days per year.

I've stuck with the R888's as I like to keep the car original, but the prices, wear rate and the way they find all the grooves in the road are swaying me towards something else.

Where did you get them for £150, Chris?

bluediamond
19-01-2011, 16:41:37
I had mine from camskill

They are smoother/quieter on the road than 888s and don't aquaplane on puddles lol. I would highly recommend them :)

I keep wondering about trying new rubber, but always end up back at the 888s.

I suppose if theyre good enough for an atom, exige, camparo, r500, etc, then theyre probably best for my little megane too.

Anyone seen/tried these michelin pilot sport cup+ tyres I keep spotting?

£208 each on blackcircle ... :-)

I am sure these quotes of £150 a tyre are a bit wishful thinking

i'm in the exact same boat and i like the car being original but the 888's just dont seem to last at all!

Does the R26r run a 225/40/18 or a 235? (mine is tucked up for the winter)

poobah
19-01-2011, 23:41:01
.R's run a 225/40/18 if running an R888 or similar trackday rubber.

If it's on road rubber (due to them not taking the Toyo option originally), they fit a 235/40/18.

Russ_Ellis
20-01-2011, 00:10:45
Ah, there is the price discrepancy then .. I was wanting some for my R26 and was looking at 235's ... big price jump to closer to £190 each :-(

Could I run 225's on standard R26 rims?

Steve Saunders
20-01-2011, 00:17:23
Chris, cheers mate. Definitely gonna go for these when my R888's have had it. Seem a lot more sensible option.

bluediamond
20-01-2011, 00:40:54
I'm running 225s on mine and have no complaints. I didn't see much point in an extra 30 quid per tyre for 235s for my road use. The toyos would be half worn by now yet the yokes are barely touched

They need a few extra miles to warm up compared to 888s but for the cost/wear difference, I can live with that lol.

Steve, if your ever passing local gimme a txt, you no you can take WL out for a boost anytime matey ;) I'm hardly ever using it atm.

I do need to pop up sometime mate, I've not forgotten.

Not used mine in over 10 weeks, so know what you mean. We'll sort a meet when the weather gets better and I get a tax disc. LOL.

Rogan

lol i taxed mine today, think it might venture out of the garage this weekend if the weather stays good! :P i'll check the tyre situation then and see how many i need :s lol

The mich Cups are the tyre that all other manufactures try to beat.
The Mich cup + are a slightly modified version for better wet grip, but the plain cups are very good on track.

The AD 08 is a fast road tyre similar to the Hankook RS2/RS3,Toyo R1R etc.
The Yoko AO48 would be a direct comparison to the R888,and in most peoples opinion a better tyre I would think.

No point in trying to find, or convince people, a low wear rate tyre that provides the dry grip of a correctly used and dedicted track orientated semi slick. They don't exist. Tyre compounds and structures are designed to meet specific requirements. A semi-slick on song will have a high wear rate. That's the price you pay for the grip.

Non standard size tyres need to be acceptable to your insurance company and you also reduce the area of road contact patch.

Depends , one is designed to work at high temperatures on track with occasional road use.
The other is designed for fast road and occasional track use.
The only test I've seen where a fast road tyre was put up against track day tyres, was with the the Hankook RS2..
It lapped 0.5 sec slower than the R888,but after 5 laps the time gap grew as the RS2 would of been getting too hot.
The other way around the RS2 was a far better road tyre and far better on track in the wet.It would be similar with the AD08.
imop any track tyre is money down the drain when used on public roads.
What does it work out to,maybe 10p to 15p a mile just on tyres !!

conley
20-01-2011, 12:14:16
Absolutely Jay.

You have to chose the tyre for the job and desired performance envelope, but also accept the associated limitations.

You just know people would like the cheap Chinese tyre to be as good as the premium product or a lower wear rate ‘track tyre’ to better than the dedicated product.

You gotta keep the dream alive. Some even try to convince themselves they have found the answer.

I was reading about the new Conti 5 the other day(not the same as the 5p).
Tyre manufactures are trying as hard as they can to develop tyres that reduce noise and rolling road resistance,to help car manufactures Co2 levels
In doing so,will the tyres still grip the road as well ?
The top manufactures invest hundreds of millions in trying to do this, the Chinese will just make a copy with Rubber compounds from the 50`s,and save further money where they can in the construction of the tyre.
I did see that rubber prices have just gone up, and all manufactures including the Chinese are putting prices up.
Inflation and labour costs are hitting Chinese manufactures,so either prices will have to go up,or the quality will stay the same.
Other news.
Pirelli have finished testing of their new F1 tyre in Abu Dhabi, even testing the wet tyre at night time.
Hankook have just signed a 3yr deal supplying the DTM series, replacing Dunlop.
Hankook say,the want to get more involved in sprint races, instead of the 24hr races etc

lol, you guys telling me my Kangoo van wont handle as good as my .R cos its using Fullrun tyres? :P

yea i understand, but is the AD08 the equivalent to T1R's or 888? as i had t1R's on my integra when i went to the nurburgring and found they were like jelly :S

Equivalent means the same. The AD08, R888 and T1R are all different tyres, different performance.

Maybe you already know that though.

poobah
20-01-2011, 15:11:46
I think you mean equivalent to R1R's not the T1R. The R1R is more comparable to the AD08 if i recall correctly.

jaybyme
20-01-2011, 15:37:36
We can say that your Kangoo needs twice the distance to stop from 60mph in the wet compared to a top tyre.
Toyo
T1R Sport = Road
R1R = Road/track
R888 = Track/Road
Yokohama
Advan sport = Road
AD08 = Road/Track
A048 = Track/Road

I had cups on the CSL and they are a cracking tyre. Closest thing you can get to a road legal slick.

conley
20-01-2011, 21:01:19
PS Cups are good but they are not some sort of undiscovered secret sensation.

No better than a similar warmed up GG R888 or MH AO48 for dry grip.

Shove a GGG or SG compound R888 on a 17 inch rim and make a dry grip comparison with a PS Cup. The R888 will **** all over it.

I really like my AD08s I have on my R26R, I would like to use R888/A048s but for the cost of them and the amount of all year road use I don't feel they're suitable for me personally. I did consider R1-R but they're are near enought the same cost as the R888 so because of that I decided they weren't worth bothering with. Plus points of the AD08 for me are the 8mm tread, stiff sidewall and pretty reasonable wear rate, I have found though that past about 4mm the performance seems to drop off, been through many heat cycles though which may have accelerated things somewhat.
