: ariel atoms
meggerman 06-10-2006, 23:04:59 there quick arent they, i mean i knew they were stupid and all but watch this short video from start to end, the TVR must be really tonking it on the roundabout and yet it catches up so stupidly easliy and fast
http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=7704419887701957271&q=ariel+atom
i want one.. the 300hp one 8)
btw.. what worries me is the white van at the end, it must be so easy to get wiped out in one of these things
Jon Seal 07-10-2006, 08:44:46 saw a bloke with one at the local car parts shop, he had the one with the supercharged honda engine in it, just had the charger belt shortened to give 320 bhp
how do you know the TVR was on one? How fast are Wedges?
What did the van do wrong?
1m 46s for 20s of interest?
In fairness though I've never seen a TVR quicker than an atom on track. I've followed one a few times and they serious bits of kit - also they seem almost as wide as they are long.
Bubbles 07-10-2006, 10:13:20 Im slightly concerned that hes driving along the motorway... no helmet... and no windscreen
A stone in your face would hurt!
And JESUS the acceloration... i gota get me one of those :D
Jon Seal 07-10-2006, 12:40:08 yeah a helmet is a must in one of those, It was a TVR 350i by the looks of things so not a particularly fast one but all the same you can see how brutal the acceleration is. Noticed how he slowed for the 30 zone whereas the TVR driver seemed to carry on at silly speed! Van reacted well considering a TVR had just flown past him at 60 odd mph lol
meggerman 07-10-2006, 18:17:13 the van worried me, just how rapidly a small almost transparent object like the atom with silly pace almost too fast for the road if anyone isnt on there top guard and pull out you dont stand a chance in that thing it would be game over.
imagine no helmet on slamming into the side of a van at 50mph !
Ok, I now see your point about the van. I'd don't know if the atom has ABS (anyone?) but being pretty light, I'd imagine that it has some pretty decent breaks so should stop pretty sharpish. But as you suggest, thats no good if someone drives into you.
As for the areo screen- I'm lucky enough to be able to drive an areo screened R300 and have never felt like I might not be seen, or had anything in my eye. The air flow over your head is pretty good though you still get the wind in your face. However, there is no stopping the rain!
Nick the Greek 13-10-2006, 18:58:37 Don't you have to pay a few thousand more to get the decent brakes on an Atom?
MrTurner 13-10-2006, 19:27:47 Not a lot different to a bike I guess. Only difference is you swap a helmet for a cage around you and a seat belt!

Looks fun!!!
Jon Seal 13-10-2006, 23:46:33 still dont get the point about the van, it just pulls up to the junction normally which considering a TVR has just flown by at 80 mph is good going. At the end of the day slamming into anything in an atom is game over, a tree, blade of grass etc!
meggerman 14-10-2006, 13:13:36 still dont get the point about the van, it just pulls up to the junction normally which considering a TVR has just flown by at 80 mph is good going. At the end of the day slamming into anything in an atom is game over, a tree, blade of grass etc!
the van does nothing wrong, but i can just see a replica event simular to that where the higher up van driver doesnt see the almost transparent tiny atom blazing towards at speed, the fact that someone at a junction looks left + right +right again etc.. for a few seconds is the same time it takes for a small car like an atom to be out of field of vision to being right up besides you as you pull out.. basically too small, too transparant, too fast for a public road imo its freaky accelaration is what takes it from not being there to being right there in just a few seconds
should really be a track car only
Jon Seal 14-10-2006, 15:00:27 yeah I guess thats a risk you have to take on board when you buy one. Its like bikers, totally stupid/damgerous thing to do but boy is it fun :D but you have to take the risks on board. An atom is always going to come off worse in a bump although ali chassis like that are supposed to be really safe :?
Swen6 16-10-2006, 21:15:22 Driving up the A40 last weekend and 7 went past me, only one with a Helmet sold that.......It was cold that day :D
rs megane 17-10-2006, 17:41:02 Honda Civic Type R engine, supercharge it to over 300 h.p., and you really have something 0-60 in 2.9
meggerman - I don't get it, not being there one moment then being there the next has nothing to do with acceleration.
Imagine you are driving your megane at 60mph in the same senario - I can't see the differene.
Also, they aren't that small - cf a motorbike (like jon said) , micra, smart roadster, smart car, et al
track car only? not sure about that - with it breaks and and handling capability then it could avoid a potential accident much more easily than then a soggy megane.
Any car is only driven as responsible as its driver, how many nova SR's or Fiesta's have you seen in a hedge?
Also, go out and drive one - you'll find that you don't need to use it's 300bhp much at all - if ever when on the road. The top end is irrelevent- you pull up at the lights in you meg, boot it and extract a 0-60 in say 7 seconds - you are close to the limit of hte car and its traction. Do the same in an M5 (pick any powerful car) and you'll get there in 7 seconds with out trying and always maintaining traction.
pearly 18-10-2006, 11:48:32 very nice
hellfire 19-10-2006, 13:46:03 there was a 450 bhp one on autotrader for 40k. 700/900 bhp per ton, cant remember which. think it's still there.
