Oohh - easy bubs. I said exactly the same and got flamed once.

IMO though, they are a bit w@nk. Basically the cheapest VW you can get. If you can't afford a Seat, don't bother with the VW group. As good as the Skoda might be in some peoples eyes, they seem to be driven by people who have apoint to prove. I.e. Yep, I've got a skoda, but look how well specc'd it is, look how fast it is. I've only seen the fabia vRS driven by chavs, thinking they've got an F1 car.

Here comes my flaming again..

good point... just test drove one... they are really quick!!! before you know it you're doing silly speed. very comfortable and easy to drive, gear changes were a bit notchy, but in gear acceleration was ace!!! really suprised by them, the new kit on it is quite good really, didn't get to test drive the special edition one, but the one i drove had the leather, really nice, soft feel and you sink into them. quality isn't as high as a vw, but it's definantly on par with the megane 225 imo... the salesman who's car it was had had it remaped by revo to 170bhp and 290lb/ft torque, let me test drive it on my own, with the map and without the map... quite a neat little toy really. definantly had more urgency when the throttle pedal was pressed, and again, before you knew it you was doing 130mph. erm 70mph i mean. :D

try chipping a Fabia, then you'll see quick ;)

although the clutch then slips as it can't handle the power haha

i can't get over the looks of the Fabia... might be better as a 3 door but still would buy a slightly older VeeDub over a new Skoda :)

I'm with meggerman on this one sorry, how can anyone make a valued decision on a car they may have never owned. I can't obviuosly deny that "you have only ever seen chavs driving them" but that is a little bit stereo typical, maybe to your local area. I have seen quite a few in my area driven by what I could only describe as the average family man.

Let it be noted that a Fabia also wiped the floor with the BMW MINI which is viewed to be a good car purely by its popularity, when it was revued on Top Gear, by people who make it there business to gather info on motoring, so you can't say they talk crap as well, although like you said it is all personal opinion.

These are all imo of course.

Before we get into a raging debate - lets just remember I've not actually slated their performance, just the driving style of those I've seen in them, and that I personally do not like them.

It is the image and reputation of the car which is still suffering. Not as it once was, but it still is.

Just because people have raved and said how great a drive, how great a car it is doesn't mean it's good. Us megane owners have lived with the 'critics' stating the 225 isn't all that when we all love them.

At the end of the day, all the manufacturers care about are sales figures/profits.

Sure - the skoda might be a better car than the Mini - but which has sold more? We live in an image conscious world, so all the while the image of the skoda is poor, BMW launched an absolute money printing machine with the mini, regardless of what any of us, or the 'critics' think.

Whether you agree with the above or not - it's all horses for courses. I personally hate them and wouldn't even consider one, but if we were all the same, it'd be a bit boring.

Maybe it's because my dad once owned one of the proper old-school skoda's? Maybe it's because I'm too materialistic and live up my own arse. Whatever it is, I don't like them.

*edit - sorry, forgot to mention that I am not trying to make a valued decision, nor have I tried to - I just plain and simple don't like anything about them styling/image-wise. Any car has to get past that hurdle for me first before I'd consider owning it. With the megane I liked the styling, the performance figures of it, then checked the price and took it for a test drive. The Skoda falls at the first, and I can personally think of a long list of cars I'd rather own.

Not my cup of tea as Mr T said,

But they shift well, but you do seem to get a certain breed of person driving them.

But with the 225 you get a varied range of person driving them which i find well funny! :D
