Right I need to charge the battery on my car as its probably nearly dead after sitting still for a month? What do I connect first, the earth right?

Also would the diesel have gone off, I ran the tank down to empty, so if I just fill it up to the top, should it be ok? It was serviced just before I took it off the road

your fuel will be fine James. yep, connect the earth first. or just get a jump from another car and take yours out for a bit of a drive about. is it completely dead?

If it doesn't start, i think it needs to be disconnected before you start charging it. What ever you do, DON'T jump start it with jump leads!!!!

what happens if u use jump start leads on them?

if you use jump leads you stand a chance of sending a spike down the leads and killing one of your computers usually the abs computer which can be expensive

i jump start cars all day long i've had no prob.
quick tip, when jump starting maybe put the sidelights on so the power surge can travel to the lights and not the ecu like johnston mentioned. thats what bmw and merc recommend u do but with all the electrics on cars u should probaly do it to all of em.
another one dont use the earth on the vehicle with the flat battery use an earth on the engine.
leave connected for ten mins if battery is totally discharged this can aid recovery of the battery.
turn vehicle off whilst trying to start car with flat battery. if the engine is running and the battery and is larger it can cause the battery to struggle starting cos the bigger one trys to suck the life out of it.
once started drive for about 40 mins and then see how it go's
