: TVR Tamora
Jonboy 25-05-2007, 20:46:16 This has got me tempted...
http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_search.jsp?searchform=&modelexact=1&lid=search_used_cars_full&photo=1&state=none&sort=3&hassearched=Y&make=TVR&min_pr=17000&source=0&model=TAMORA&max_pr=18000&miles=1500&agerange=&mileage=3&postcode=ub10+9lf&bodyid=0&fuelid=0&colour=&transmissionid=0&ukcarsearch_full.x=48&ukcarsearch_full.y=10
would have liked a "wilder" colour however the low mileage and the price are turning me.
Anyone owned a Tamora before? Any hints and tips would be useful.
Thanks.
John.
paul_r26 25-05-2007, 21:47:18 My brother inlaw had a tuscan, all I can say is cost money money money money money etc.......
Jon Seal 25-05-2007, 22:09:51 I'm not really sold on TVRs TBH. They look amazing, sound amazing, etc but basically they are awfully made and dreadfully unreliable. with 10k on the clock it will be ready for a rebuild soon (really!)
Too much heartache for my liking!

rebuild @ 10k? even a Tamora...?
but as a weekend car its gotta be worth a shot?
paul_r26 25-05-2007, 23:42:28 10k, yep, his was at 14k only 3 years old as an igition fault cause terminal damage to the engine.......
He rarely used it, the tuscan, al be it different was uncontrollable in anything other than dry hot weather.....
Icarus 26-05-2007, 07:52:41 I've had a modified Chimera and a Tuscan RR. Neither where uncontrollable in any weather - just as with all potent and light RWD cars they required the respect they deserved if you wanted to avoid any hairy moments.
My Chimaera covered 60K without any problems at all. The Tuscan managed 11K before needing a top end rebuild. Personaly I'd shy away from any Speed 6 powered car which doesn't have a 2005/6 spec engine package. The later Sag's appear to be pretty bullet proof.
I really like Tamora's and have driven a few recently with an eye to getting one. Really is a more modern Chim (my favourite TVR). If you could stretch another 3K quid or so you should be able to pick one up with a late spec engine that will resolve any issues with follower wear etc.
Yeah they might go pop once in a while but nothing at all for any money can out shine a TVR in the looks and noise department.
Cheers

minnnt 26-05-2007, 08:23:08 what was the main differences between the chimera and cerbera matt?
Jonboy 26-05-2007, 10:29:27 matt,
you mention about the late spec engine, what year was this introduced?
Icarus 26-05-2007, 10:45:46 matt,

05/06 - updated top end mainly to avoid all the previous issues of 5 - 10K mile engine life.
Most speed 6's are this spec now and if they list "rebuld" it's most likely been done to this spec as all the bits available are now 05/06 spec. Any which haven't but have 30k+ on them now probably aren't going to go bang!
Minnt - Chim was a two seater RV8 powered drop top, Cerb was a 2 + 2 AJP8 or Speed 6 powered coupe.

rosscoe 26-05-2007, 22:18:55 I would love a TVR as a weekend car, but just as i have done with the Renault, I would buy it knowing what I was letting myself in for. ie a brilliant car, maybe a little marred by build quality and reliability.
Read up on them and make your choice - plenty of advice out there - try the owners club forums - supposed to be a friendly bunch
Icarus 26-05-2007, 22:26:01 If you want an easy to look after and trouble free (for a proper sports car) buy an RV8 powered one.
Chimaera being my preference. No more difficult to look after or work on than a Capri and if you stick to 4 litre ones then all the bits can be easily sourced from Landy/Rangey dealers.

meggerman 27-05-2007, 11:32:22 so is the 350c any good icarus ?
Icarus 27-05-2007, 14:24:32 Yes very good, much the same as a Tamora, Tuscan, Sagaris in most respects though. I really like the T350c, really neat little car and some of the later ones where very very well screwed together.

there depreciating nicely aswell should be under £20k soon some are at £18k but wouldnt touch them bottom of the barrel ones.
theres the upgrade version with 390bhp. and they only weigh 1100kg !
Icarus 27-05-2007, 14:28:00 That is a TVR 390bhp though...... best take that with a pinch of salt ;-) Over 350bhp is the best estimate LOL

still quick enough though ;)
Alex_172 29-05-2007, 05:12:26 I've been seriously looking at TVRs as a replacement to the Megane in the next year or two!!
I've been using the Megane as a weekend car anyway so I was thinking why not buy a proper weekend car!!! lol
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for future reference. I'm in love with the Tuscans but I'd rather go for the most reliable model I can find so I can enjoy it without spending the earth out on it!
meggerman 29-05-2007, 09:40:19 i think you will always be looking at spending a lot on a TVR, wether its depreciation, fuel, road tax £!?, tyres, oil, or faults. you should go into it knowing there could be 4 figure prices to rebuild or fix stuff.
still a very desireable thing to own. there are so many other nice things around but none of them can offer the TVR sound or performance
Icarus 29-05-2007, 12:22:01 Worth noting that TVR power are doing a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty on their 2007 Spec Speed 6 engines. IMHO well worth looking for a busted Speed 6 Cerbera for about 10K and spending another 8 or so at power to have it converted to S6 2007 spec. Gets you a very nice cerb with high 300's bhp and a 2 year warranty on the only bit thats very expensive to put right.
Failing that a Cerb or a Griff will be the most cost effective/reliable.
Cheers

Liquid R 29-05-2007, 12:46:11 My brother had a T350, bloody fast and beautiful looking car but cost him shed loads of money keeping it on the road. I know its tempting but don't do it!

now you're talking. . .
love the tuscan, the t350, the chim, the Sag and the cerbra . . .spot the link?!?
However, finding a freshly blown cerbra is quite a challenge, which it would need to be to get it for £10k. Ears to the ground I guess.
Can see a few good examples for circa 20k.

ICARUS...what about this one? do you think this engine will need the rebuilt that you have talked about??
Love the colour!!!
kevin_hall 05-06-2007, 14:24:44 I recently bought a tvr. I did a load of research before getting mine and went for a chim because all reports point to them being amongst the most reliable.
I deliberately went to a dealer and got a warranty so that if anything went wrong it would be fixed. Now done 2,500 miles in 10 weeks and not put a foot wrong. I would say that whatever you get check its got a full tvr/tvr specialist service history and that everything add up.
Running costs are pretty reasonable on the old rv8. I get 20mpg in traffic, 25 on a longer journey with some 'spirited' driving. Service intervals are 6k but not too expensive £300-500 depending where you go + whether its major/minor service. Road tax is a bargain at £185 as pre CO2 - cheaper than the clio! Not used a drop of oil in 2.5k. Tyres are pricey but seem to be wearing well - obviously lack of traction control mean you can easily get through them if you have a heavy right foot!
Have a look on the pistonheads tvr forum and you'll find loads of useful info.
Jonboy 05-06-2007, 14:52:04 cool ive just registered on pistonheads and posted!

Its hard to say if it would need a rebuild or not, there is no set time or mileage that they go at. Best bet with anything speed 6 lacking in the warranty department is budget for it!
