I have checked and cleaned the earth... It must be the alternator as soon as i apply any revs the lights go out, problem is its seems to be functioning fine etc so do you think i shoud bother getting a new one? Its having a new aux belt wednesday so would be a good time to fit a new one but is it worth the 100 odd quid extra?

With the engine running what was the voltage on the meter?
You can eliminate engine earth by clamping jump lead to neg battery and engine block or alternator if you can!

Charging voltage is just over 14v which i understand is fine?? If i switch i few things on in the car it will dip bit quickly climbs back to 14v so the alternator seems strong! Had another look tonight and if i switch the fans on full and the heated rear screen then the battery light and stop light fully come on? But voltage again is fine....

Surely not?? That would be, like, the proper way to do it.
