As the 2014 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship rumour mill begins to swing into full effect, two NGTC specification Renault Meganes are set to be built ready for competition in one of the biggest tin-top series’ in the world.
In the most recent issue of Motorsport News, it is reported the French manufacturer will have examples of the hatchback ready to race in the 2014 championship. The Clio Cup safety car pictured is set to be the shape chosen for NGTC regulations which are set to be implemented throughout the field next year.
The cars themselves are said to be being built as a commercial proposition by a backer after a lengthy consultation period. With only three rounds left of the current season, MN were informed that at least one of the cars would be ready to hit the track at the tail of end of the 2013 campaign however it is unlikely it will race.
An anonymous source told Motorsport News this week: “The decision to run a Megane hasn’t been taken lightly. There are many factors to the choice and the dynamics of the car, which are suited to the BTCC, is only one of them. It will also be great to have another badge represented on the BTCC grid.”
The deal itself is being linked to an existing Renault Clio Cup team currently however there has been no confirmation of who. Details of the drivers to the two NGTC machines is also yet to be announced too – once again bringing more intrigue to the story.
Fans can expect to see at least one mock-up version of the popular hatchback at Rockingham in just over two weeks time on the 14/15th September as it is set to sit on display.
It was in 1999 that the French manufacturer competed in the series, competing in 165 races and winning 38. Their most successful period came in the late 90′s with Alain Menu taking the 97′ title in the Laguna – one of the iconic Super Touring machines.
More details are set to be announced in time.
