Just downloaded the clip on my 10meg broadband (took about 20 minutes!!). I saw the show but don't recall it, as at the time the Meg was not a car I had considered.

Nice section on the car though. Clarkson certainly rates it well.

Didn't show the lap, as they were testing the VXR, but they did say it was 1/2 a second quicker than the VXR, which did the lap in 1m 33 sec dead. That means the Meg mnaged a 1m 32.5 sec lap.

Not bad at all!!!

No, actually the MK5 Golf R32 did the lap in 1m 30.4sec. This is 2.1sec qucker than Meg225, but then it does have 4WD and an additional 20bhp as standard. 2.1 Sec is actually a long time in terms of track times. Doesn't however change the fact that the Meg is still a good car, and can be bought for nearly £13k less. You could have 2 Meg225'S for the cost of he R32 - how about a 4WD MEG running an engine for the front and one for the rear :p :p . Would that become a Meg 450????

I have the Top Gear clip of the R32 v's the BNW 130i Sport, which does the lap in 1m 31.9

Just looked at that clip again and it does certainly say that the Golf R32 does the lap in 1m 33.4, but the clip I have shows a 1m 30.4. I wonder if the 1m 33.2 is the MK4 golf?

Also, the MK5 Golf that was tested was the DSG gearbox version which has been reported to be quite awesome in how quickly it changes gears. Golf state 6.2 to 60 for the DSG, as compared to 6.5 for the manual, but the a MK5 with a DSG box was tested in VW Driver at 5.8 to 60. That makes it one hell of a quick car however you look at it.

Come to think of it, the 1m 33.4 could be the manual MK5, and there are more of those on the road than teh DSG versions (it was a DSG that I had on order - cancelled due to cost and indefinate waiting time!!)
