Uneven Rear Tyre Wear

My 225 has now covered just over 18,000 miles on its original SportMaxx tyres.

I had the fronts swapped to the back after 6,000 miles by the dealer when I bought it (demo car), and despite them forgetting to reset the tyre pressure sensors, everything has been fine and I still have about 4mm tread on the fronts.

However, my rear nearside is really scrubbed-out on the inside. This tyre has only done 6,000 on the front and 12,000 on the back.

The front tyre is wearing very evenly, so it looks like the wear must have happened whilst on the back. Its almost like the rear wheel is towing-out.

Any ideas on why? Is it my suspension? Is it my brakes? Is it common? Should I just shut up and be grateful that they have lasted this long? ;-)

If your worried i'd get a laser alignment done, but its hard to tell without seeing it and you have had a few miles out of them

I don't want to scare you but when my mate first started out as a salesman he had a micra as a demo, he hit the back end and bent the rear subframe but didnt tell anyone and they sold the car!
you dont know what your getting with a demo car!

(when he worked for DIXONS!- he's now a manager somewhere )

He's now a manager and i was stupid enough to buy my 225 from him
then again i did save £££££'s

I think lazer re allignment is the answer, was talking to a mate of mine who has an impreza, apparently all the UK dealers do lazer re allignment of all scoobies as they come out of the factory set all over the place. will be getting mine done when the eibachs are fitted

Had wheel alignment done and all reported to be OK.

I was told that if it was an alignment problem, it would have afected both sides, not just one and is more likely to be a camber set-up.

I was told by my renault service manager that this is a common fault and is due to the design of the rear-end and is common to Lagunas as well. Therefore I must live with it.

I'm still not convinced, as this means that my rear near side will wear out much quicker than any of the others.

I have found that when pushed right to the limit, the car oversteers on right-handers, but doesn't on left-handers (but that could just be my imagination, or the fact that the tyre is now knacked)

Any more ideas?

One word 'bullshit'

you cannot alter the camber especially the rear end, do you have any pictures of the wear?

Certainly not a common thing on mine, I got 18000 miles on my rears and only changed them due to getting a non repairable puncture. Took them off with about 2.5mm tread still on them and no signs of uneven wear.

I think they may be telling you porkies. :?

Obviously the uneven wear is a bad thing mate, but 18000 out of a tyre on the meggy is fookin brilliant :shock: !! Think that could go into the guiness book of records! :lol:

I know the conti's do have a funny wear pattern, so without looking at them its hard to tell if its normal or there is a porblem

I would suggest you take the car into one of the national tyre companies and ask them to check the alignment.

I was in Kw** F** the other week having tyres fitted to my company car, got speaking to the service manager he mentioned that they had just bought a new laser wheel alignment for scoobies and the like. He mentioned that the stealers charge over £200 for this service and they charge £50. The new kit looked the business so I wold suggest ringing up a few independant tyre companies to see if they can check this out for you.

Thanks for the feedback.

The Renault dealer reckons that all dealers have to have a laser alignment jobbie, and that their's is the best you can get and charge £220+Vat to switch it on. However, when I asked if they had actually used it, they didn't give me a very clear answer! (which obviously means NO!).

I have tried to take a picture, but its hard to see any real detail. Its an original Dunlop SportMaxx (Cup Kit). Basically, there is about 1.3mm more tread around the outside area than the inside area, and the inside edge is totally smooth (Dunlop Kojak-style).

You have a rear torsion beam which keep both wheels straight (or should)
so even when lowering it the camber stays the same.

I would personnally put new tyres on and watch the pressures
keep it at 29psi around town and 32psi when on the motorway(back tyre figures only)
if the new one does it your hub must be slightly bent
i wouldnt waste £220 on an alignment mate

Just a thought you could have a buckled wheel, might be worth checking that!
