Some really big help needed please (Renault technical answers)

Hey guys, I really need some help on this one please. And I would appreciate it if you could just spend a few minutes to read.

My Laguna coupe, the 3.5 V6 has no built in sat-nav fitted to it. I currently just have the standard Arkamys radio/Bluetooth fitted. I would have liked to have the sat-nav when I got the car but there was a bit of a cock up when the car was delivered. So for some time now I have been looking at maybe getting the in dash one fitted.

Renault has told me that it's not possible to fit this now as an option, because it has to be done at the factory. The same goes with all other optional accessories ie, sound packs, cruise control etc. But the main reason why I have been told that they won't fit it, is because it's not practicable to do due to the high labour costs that would be involved and individual part costs them self. In the end it would end up in the thousands £££! Rather than the standard optional price that it would cost when placing the order. Not to mention the time that it would take in the garage.

With the above in mind I have been very very fortunate to be offered an in dash sat- nav out of a 'Laguna Coupe Tom Tom edition' and at a very good price too! All the parts, controls, antenna, loom etc. even the radio is self. But now my problem is that someone has told me that it would not be possible to fit, because of the coding and something to do with a media interface? Also Renault computers are not able to read the system due to different VIN numbers or something?

Now I'm not saying that this person is wrong and going against what he has found out for me. It's just that I know that things like a sat-navs go like hot cakes from breaking and salvage yards! So when they come to the likes of Ebay they sell pretty quickly too.

But it seems very strange that it would not work on my car because: 1 - Renault would be prepared to sell me all the individual parts. 2 - I know that the likes of the UCH module can be programmed from one car to another. 3 - Radio's can now be removed from one vehicle to another.

Even on here people have retro fitted cruise control to the car and I have heard that ECU's can be programmed for the car if you got a replacement too.

I would just like this cleared up please and if someone could tell me for 100% certain if I can or cannot retro fit the Sat nav to the car. I' expected that some sort of programming would need to be done as I recently got a spare hands free key card from another vehicle programmed to my car.

This would be much appreciated please and if someone could give me more info, then free beers from me :)

I say that it's Urgent because the guy that has the Sat-Nav has already got another 3 people in the queue behind me after it. And this is what I can't understand why?

Thank you :)

My suspicion would be that the tom tom edition car might have a small amount of extra code on one of the onboard computers in the car. If that is the case then you would just need to get renault to re-program / replace whichever microcontroller deals with that interface. (This is assuming that the cars are the same age/ model version).

Of course Renault might not want to reprogram the relevant part for you (if required). What is the worst that happens if you buy it? Try it, see if it works, speak to renault and get their help / advice. If it all fails then sell it again on ebay and you shouldn't lose much, if any, money.

Just to add, I am not a car tech, but do work as an engineer in electronics / embedded software. Take my advice with a pinch of salt.

thanks mate, well i would have thought that there would be some sort of code within the software in the computers. what would be nice to find out is if it's solid state or all software based. ie by solid state i mean like some new car radios now have built in circuits that will over power part of circuits and destroy components if a pass code is entered incorrectly more than 3 times. then you have to send away to specialists/engineers to get components replaced. usually by providing ID, V5, having extra identification checks etc.

I don't see why Renault wouldn't do this for me? if i wanted it programmed. surely if i wanted it done and dished over the notes, then they would be getting something out of it?

cheers mate, i sent him a PM tonight. i know that he is very good and knows a lot of stuff. but i didn't want to be disrespectful and bombard him with a PM straight away. i thought maybe he might have been on line tonight and made a comment. but pm is sent now :sweatdrop:

Sorry mate didn't see this. Yeah the Vin thing I think can be wiped by Renault.
But we have swooped the Vin ones about for testing and as long as you know the codes it let's you do it.
I would go for it mate fit it yourself one weekend and see if it works.
Are the dash boards different?
Bit of a untested route your going down really

Cheers mate :) much appreciated. yes the dash boards are slightly different but that only the piece of trim between the dash board it's self and the centre console. maybe a cheap part from Renault as its just plastic and probably a few mounts. but at the worst, i could always fibre glass it to the dash and then flock or carbon cover it.

so are you saying that the programming is all software based? so if originally I had sat nav in the car. i could take parts from another vehicle (say for a spare/replacement parts) and get them to operated as long as it's programmed?

and what sort of codes would i need with it? I'm assuming radio code, VIN number and vehicle registration?
