Engine coolant leak

Bought my 2007 LY R26 18 days ago from a Renault main dealer, full Renault history with 34K. The drive home was about 60 miles. The following morning i noticed a small puddle on the floor. To be honest i just thought it might have been some standing water from where they valeted it, and it had now dripped.

Since buying the car i have done two reasonable sized journeys approx 100 miles, and my usual drive to work is about 7/8 miles each way. I have noticed a small puddle on one or two other previous occasions as the car is garaged away from the elements.

Over the weekend i thought i would just check the levels. To my horror there was only the smallest amount of coolant left in the expansion tank! Like a table spoon full. Obviously i have not driven the car with a low coolant level. I have pressure tested the system to 2.0 bar on a cold engine and it seems to hold the pressure.

I have topped up the coolant level to max with Renault coolant and bled the system via the bleed valve on the heater hose. Then took the car for a spirited drive to warm the engine up totally for apprx 20 miles. The following morning the level was below the minimum mark!

I have now topped up the coolant again and since driven the car to work, the 7/8 miles that it is, and yet again it dropped to half way when i checked the levels on a cold engine.

Over all i have put in 2 litres of coolant. The leak seems to fall on the nearside of the engine away from the water pump, but from what i can tell without having it up on a ramp yet, is that the water collecting below on the floor seems to be from were the engine and gearbox meet. I am aware that there is a electric coolant pump above, this seems to look dry and so do all the associated pipes above.

Is this a common problem? or has anyone else had similar issues?

Any ideas or thoughts welcome

Thanks for the suggestions guys :) a loose clip or a split was my first thought, but this would surely fail the pressure test? There stands a good chance that the rad could be at fault, as the loss of fluid does seem greater when the engine is up to full running normal temp, this is also when the rad has greatest flow through it.

What seems to be the issue's with the rads? do they rot from the inside out? or is there a part to blame? I know the warranty covers the rad, but it sure wont if its a stone that has damaged it :(

Well i have found the leak now, seems to be from the top nearside corner of the rad. Only problem i have had now is that the warranty company doesnt want to pay, even though a Renault specialist diagnosed the problem! The main dealer want the car back to take a look as they say the warranty will cover it. The problem is that its £200 for recovery back to the dealer & then it might be alot more if they decide the warranty wont cover. I guess then i have to pay from what they have said. Bad times :(

Had the fixed back in October with a brand new genuine part fitted and supplied by the Renault specialist i use. The Renault garage where i bought the car from approved the fix and so did the warranty company who paid the bill.

As of yesterday i now have coolant leaking all over my garage floor and the rad seems to be leaking AGAIN! From what i can see it is leaking from the top nearside corner AGAIN!

Has anyone else had a similar problem? or am i just that unlucky, and need Two rads in 6 months?

It seems that part of the shrouding of the fan, that supports a intercooler pipe was broken causing the pipe to hit the rad.

£58 New fan shrouding
£164 New rad
£200 labour

The above which iam having to pay as the Renault dealer has refused to help me eventhough the car has 6 months warranty remaining :(

Well, here's a story for y'all.

My car came home a couple of days ago and proceeded to piddle all over the concrete in our carport. The liquid was thin, but felt slippery. Had a sweet smell (kinda like very weak honey/golden syrup) and disappeared quickly, so figured it was coolant.

The expansion bottle took about 3 litres  so it was quite clearly a significant exodus. Had a look around and followed the splatter pattern back to this little blanking plug:

The temporary fix? Yep, two hose clamps. It had perished and split, and I figured it was slowly (or not so slowly) squirting liquid into the back of the engine bay.

My coolant is now very dilute, and I'll have to replace it as soon as this is all sorted.

Doing some digging, I also found what I guess is the bleed point for the cooling system:

which hides down behind the engine, battery/ecu, air intake and is right next to the brake booster. It's just visible in the next picture too. Can anyone confirm if this is the case?

So, the next step is to find a plug for the one that's failed, and replace the coolant. Fun times
